Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The dawning of a new era in aviation. Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR), one of the fastest growing airports in South Carolina, has officially begun its ambitious $95 million expansion project. In a highly-anticipated event that took place on Wednesday, local leaders held a significant groundbreaking ceremony to mark the upcoming addition of six new gates to the airport.
With its passenger footfall steadily increasing, the MYR has been in need of extra capacity. More than 3 million individuals travel through the airport annually, and this expansion is designed to meet the future requirements of a growing passenger base. This comes after the airport had to pause its expansion efforts due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To quote Judie Olmstead, Director of Airports Horry County, “We began that process, but the process was paused because of COVID. So, we had to pick that back up in 2021. We realize that we are definitely a little short on capacity. So, we’re hoping that these six gates will meet the needs of our passengers.“
The airport’s extension at the end of the “A” concourse promises a chic modern look with a complete glass front, boarding bridges, a new food facility, and a retail area. The inclusion of these new gates will take the total gate tally to 18, enabling the airport to handle more flights and provide improved travel experiences to passengers.
Incredibly, the construction won’t hinder the airport’s current operations. The airport authorities have made extensive plans to ensure that throughout the construction process, the day-to-day functioning of the airport remains unaffected. This is excellent news for those who utilize the airport for their travel needs, ensuring minimal disruptions.
The target for the completion of the new gates is set for December 2025. As the airport continues to grow, the added gates and facilities will surely contribute to meeting the demand, improving services, and enhancing the whole travel experience for locals and tourists alike.
The groundbreaking is the first among many steps in the progress of expansion at MYR. The upcoming years will see an exciting transformation with the promise of increased efficiency and comfort for passengers. If the ambitious plans are anything to go by, the future of the Myrtle Beach International Airport looks bright and promising, as it strives to become a shining beacon of modern aviation in South Carolina.
