On July 20th, 2024, Amber Soberg, a 33-year-old mother from Ohio, was charged with three counts of child neglect, indecent exposure, and public intoxication at a Myrtle Beach hotel. The charges follow an incident where Soberg allegedly left her three children alone at the hotel’s pool for an extended period of time.
Hotel staff at Captain’s Quarters, 901 S. Ocean Blvd., noticed the unsupervised minors playing at the pool. After consulting with security, it was found that the children were staying in the hotel with Soberg. Upon informing Soberg about the observation, she arrived at the pool wearing a transparent shirt without any pants or underwear, violating public decency.
A welfare check was subsequently called, and upon arrival, officers found Soberg unable to explain the length of time her children had been left alone at the pool, clearly intoxicated. Consequently, Soberg was taken into police custody and transported to Myrtle Beach Jail. Court records indicate that Soberg’s bail was posted the following day, and she is no longer being held in detention.
Unfortunately, the alleged neglectful incident coincided with a tragic event that happened the same day. Serenity Evans, an 11-year-old girl from Georgia, drowned at a pool at The Links in North Myrtle Beach during her vacation. Despite being quickly pulled from the pool, she succumbed to her injuries on July 21stice.
There have been a total of four child drownings in Myrtle Beach in July, with three of them tragically taking place over the Fourth of July weekend.
This unfortunate incident adds to an increasing wave of crime in Myrtle Beach recently. Unrelated reports state that on the days following both incidents, a South Carolina teenager was found shot to death just a day before his 16th birthday, a man was charged with shooting a woman, who was reportedly dying, and more than $1,500 was stolen during an armed robbery. Additionally, it involves a reported kidnapping and assault of a woman at a local bar and a fatal shooting of a teen participating in a basketball tournament downtown.
Prioritizing safety and the welfare of minors has, therefore, succumbed as a prevalent concern for local authorities and parents alike. Community efforts are underway to educate families on the importance of constant supervision, especially in locations with potential danger such as swimming pools.
Instances like these are stark reminders of the importance of adult supervision in ensuring children’s safety. The wider community is urged to prioritize child safety and engage in regular dialogues about the risks and responsibilities associated.
As sobering as these stories are, they serve as a wake-up call to all parents and caregivers about the origin of child safety – from the home itself. Vigilance and adequate adult supervision can effectively prevent such unfortunate incidents.
