Starkville, Mississippi – Will Whitson, a defensive lineman formerly with the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, has officially signed with Mississippi State University. His decision adds a significant player to the Bulldogs’ roster, as Whitson retains one season of eligibility.
During his time at Coastal Carolina, Whitson played in four games for the Chanticleers this past season. He made an impact on the field with 21 total tackles, two sacks, and one forced fumble. The previous year, he showcased his skills even further, finishing the season with 42 tackles, alongside three sacks and five quarterback hurries.
Will Whitson’s journey began at Independence Community College in Kansas, where he spent two seasons. He earned recognition as a second-team all-conference player during his second season, tallying 25 tackles and a sack.
In the context of college football transfers, Whitson ranks as the No. 370 overall player and is listed as the No. 25 defensive lineman in the latest Transfer Portal Rankings. He joins Mississippi State as their sixth defensive lineman acquired this offseason.
Whitson is the 18th player that Mississippi State has brought in through the transfer portal during this cycle. The team has lost a total of 26 players, placing them at No. 23 overall in the Transfer Portal Team Rankings. The transfer portal officially opened on December 9, 2024. Throughout the recent academic year, more than 2,800 FBS scholarship players entered their names into the NCAA’s transfer database, with the final tally resting at 2,707 transfers after accounting for those who withdrew or opted for the professional leagues.
So far in the current transfer cycle, there have been 2,293 players entering the portal, with 757 players already committing to new schools. To track the latest player movements, the Transfer Portal wire and social media accounts provide constant updates.
In addition to Whitson, Mississippi State recently secured a commitment from South Alabama transfer running back Fluff Bothwell, who made headlines by racking up 832 rushing yards and scoring 13 touchdowns in his freshman season. Bothwell is joined in the transfer class by other notable defensive linemen who aspire to bolster Mississippi State’s defensive strategy.
With the acquisition of Will Whitson, Mississippi State aims to enhance its defensive line ahead of the upcoming season. Whitson’s diverse background and proven track record position him as a transformative force for the Bulldogs. As the team prepares for the future, fans eagerly await the contributions Whitson and his fellow transfers will make in the 2025 season.
