The Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda empowers its greenkeepers by providing volunteer opportunities at significant golf events in the US, enhancing skills and fostering professional growth. Key participants, including Jemeeko Smith and Kaleyo James, have shared their experiences, showcasing the positive impact of this initiative. The club’s efforts not only develop expertise but also build a committed community, reinforcing its reputation as a top golf destination.
At the renowned Mid Ocean Club, nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of Bermuda, a proactive initiative has emerged that empowers greenkeepers to elevate their craft through volunteer opportunities at significant golf events across the United States. With an unwavering commitment to developing their staff, this initiative not only enhances skills in golf course management but also builds a community of dedicated professionals eager to learn and grow in the industry.
Over the past few years, the Mid Ocean Club has taken leaps forward with this program, enabling its greenkeepers to engage with prestigious events. So far, four enthusiastic staff members have reaped the benefits of this unique volunteering experience. These opportunities allow them to showcase their talent while gaining insights into best practices and innovative techniques used at top-tier golf venues.
Among the participants, Jemeeko Smith has become quite the seasoned volunteer, having dedicated his skills at the FedEx Cup Championship for two consecutive years. His commitment to the craft speaks volumes about the club’s mission to cultivate expertise among their team members. Rice out of the membership, Matt Jackson also took part in the FedEx Cup before embarking on new adventures. He has swapped Bermuda’s lush greens for Liverpool FC’s famed pitch management in the UK.
In an exciting development, Clarke Trott and Jeffroy Warner showcased their skills at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am held from January 30 to February 2. Volunteering at such significant events has proven to be an invaluable experience that encourages staff to return inspired and packed with fresh ideas. These new perspectives can lead to meaningful improvements back at the Mid Ocean Club, ultimately contributing to a top-notch golfing experience for members and guests alike.
A key figure in launching this initiative is Kenton Brunson, the club’s director of agronomy. His vision to widen the staff’s experience beyond Bermuda has unlocked creative pathways for growth and learning within the greenkeeping profession. It’s thrilling to think about how each opportunity not only enhances the staff’s technical skills but also nurtures professional camaraderie and a shared love for the game.
One shining star emerging from the ranks is 23-year-old Kaleyo James. With the Mid Ocean Club’s backing, he is currently pursuing a two-year turf management program at Rutgers University. The club has graciously covered his tuition, setting a prime example of how investing in employee education can lead to robust professional pathways. Kaleyo started his journey with no prior experience in turf management, but with dedication, he is expected to transition into a management role upon completion of his studies. This not only supports his personal ambition but also strengthens the club’s future leadership.
The best part of it all is that the club’s approach is both cost-effective and beneficial. While the eager members cover their own flight expenses, the clubs hosting these events generously provide accommodation, meals, and even clothing, making it a win-win situation for everyone involved.
Mid Ocean Club prides itself on being the only golf club in Bermuda ranked among the top 100 golf clubs in the world, and it continues to cement its reputation through programs like these. The blend of ambition, innovation, and community spirit reflects the ethos of this prestigious club, making it an extraordinary place for both members and staff.
As they continue to invest in their greenkeepers and embrace opportunities for growth, who knows what even greater heights they will achieve in the future? One thing is for sure – the journey is just beginning, and the greens of Bermuda are only going to get more vibrant!
