Mica Miller’s husband talks about her death: ‘I am the only one not to blame’

Myrtle Beach Woman’s High-Profile Suicide Leads to National Debate on Mental Health

In a breaking update on the tragic case of Mica Miller, her husband, John-Paul Miller, has spoken out publicly months after his wife’s suicide. Mica, a well-known figure in their community and an active member of the Solid Rock Church, took her life on April 27th at Lumber River State Park in Robeson County. Her untimely death has sparked a nationwide conversation on mental health and the pursuit of justice.

The Turmoil Before Her Death

Prior to her devastating end, Mica and her husband, Senior Pastor John-Paul, attracted attention from the local community due to multiple incidents reported involving the couple. Mica separated from her husband in January 2023 and filed for divorce by October 2023. She also reported accusations of harassment, including tire slashing and intimidation, allegedly by a person she believed was dispatched by her estranged husband.

In the midst of the turbulence, Mica was hospitalized involuntarily due to her deteriorating mental health. She later accused her husband of fraudulently initiating her hospitalization. Mica’s repeated pleas for help and protection led to the issuance of a Magistrate Summons for a bench trial, concerning a civil case seeking a restraining order against John-Paul.

Finding Mica

On the tragic day of her death, Mica was seen buying a weapon at a local pawn shop. She was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with police confirming John-Paul was not present at the site of her death. The official ruling of suicide, however, did not quell the community’s demand for justice, with many still questioning the circumstances surrounding her death.

John-Paul Miller on Mica’s Mental Health and Abuse Allegations

John-Paul, in an exclusive interview, categorically denied all allegations of physical or any form of abuse towards Mica. He detailed Mica’s struggles with mental health issues, describing erratic behaviour including high-energy stages of spending sprees and lows of threats to end her life. He attributed these episodes to Mica not taking her prescribed medication.

Responding to a question about Mica’s medical treatment, John-Paul said that multiple health care professionals had advised medication for her condition or she risked committing suicide. John-Paul admitted to hiring a private investigator, stating his intention was to ensure Mica didn’t approach a gun store.

Mica’s Law and the Husband’s Response

In the wake of her death, Mica’s family proposed “Mica’s Law”, a Coercive Control Bill aiming to highlight abusive cohesive control, using Mica’s own journals and written accounts as evidence. In response to this litany of allegations, John-Paul dismissed them and suggested the family was driven by desires for money and fame. He reinforced his denial of isolating Mica from her family or threatening her, adding vehemently, “I am the only one not to blame for her death.”

Pastor John-Paul ended on a poignant note, stating his only hope was for Mica to be remembered for her love of the church and her community. As the echoes of this tragic incident resound, the nation waits for an in-depth understanding of mental health and the potential for better protective measures, epitomized by the proposed “Mica’s Law”.
