Exciting New Developments for Myrtle Beach with MarketWalk Plan

Myrtle Beach, S.C. has a lot of buzz in the air as the City Council made a big decision on Tuesday, passing the first reading of an exciting new project called MarketWalk. This plan aims to usher in nearly 200 residential units right in the heart of our beloved community. With the approval coming in at a close 5-2 vote, it looks like we might be one step closer to seeing some transformative changes in the area.

What’s the Scoop on MarketWalk?

So, what does this plan entail? Well, the initial idea is to swap out a previous hotel proposal at the corner of Farrow Parkway and Phillis Boulevard and replace it with 192 residential units. This includes an impressive mix of 90 townhomes and 102 cottages. But wait, there’s more! The design also sprinkles in some fantastic amenities like a swimming pool, a clubhouse, a lake pavilion, and even a playground for the kids!

And for all the coffee lovers out there, there’s good news too—a drive-thru coffee shop is slated to pop up at the busy corner of Phillis Boulevard and Howard Avenue. Imagine sipping your morning brew while taking in the lovely beach vibes!

Parking and Planning Details

Now, let’s talk about parking. This new residential project is looking to include 424 parking spaces, which is well above the 394 spaces that the zoning code typically requires. Plus, for the restaurant that’s being planned, they’re proposing 15 spaces, while the code requires 28 spaces. It seems like the developers are really going out of their way to ensure we have enough spots for everyone visiting and living in this exciting new space!

A Response to Past Concerns

This isn’t the first time the city has considered a project like this. Back in March 2023, the council voted against a previous proposal by the HomeFed Corporation, largely due to worries about traffic and overcrowding. Since then, those folks have been rolling up their sleeves, connecting with different community groups, and reshaping their vision for the MarketWalk in hopes of winning our hearts and the approval of the council.

Looking Ahead

The next stages are crucial, as the community waits to see how this development could change our Myrtle Beach landscape. Councilman Bill McClure and Mayor Pro Tem Mike H. Lowder were the two voices against the plan, which might hint at ongoing discussions about what this all means for day-to-day life in Myrtle Beach. Nevertheless, many residents are hopeful that MarketWalk might just be the kind of project that brings new life and energy to our cherished town!

What Do You Think?

The cherry on top? Community feedback is always encouraged. This is a chance for all Myrtle Beach locals to chime in on how we can shape the future of our city. Have you been following the developments? What are your thoughts on this new MarketWalk plan? Your input matters, and there’s a lot to be excited about with this potential new addition to our community!

Let’s keep our fingers crossed as we wait to see how things unfold. Cheers to new beginnings and the exciting days ahead for our beautiful Myrtle Beach!
