On September 6th, 2024, news broke of a man named Ryan Taylor Schneider, who was recently sentenced for some pretty serious assault charges—but here’s the kicker: he was briefly released from jail due to a clerical error!
What Happened?
So here’s the scoop. Schneider, who’s 31, was originally convicted on multiple charges including assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, along with first-degree assault and battery and second-degree burglary after his arrest back on March 31. Sounds serious, right? He was set to face a total of three years in jail, but with two years suspended to allow for a chance at five years of probation.
But somehow, a judge wrote down the wrong info! Instead of a three-year sentence, the initial paperwork suggested a two-year sentence suspended to three years of probation. As a result, if Schneider had followed the rules, he wouldn’t have to serve any time in jail at all! The Horry County Clerk of Court’s Office, where all these documents get sorted, confirmed that it was indeed a simple mix-up from Judge David Caraker, who penned the sentencing details himself. A source from the clerk’s office, who wanted to stay anonymous, emphasized that it was a “simple error” that has since been corrected. Thank goodness for that!
A Quick Release and Quick Re-arrest
After the blunder, Schneider was out of the J. Reuben Long Detention Center on Tuesday—savoring the sweet taste of freedom, no doubt—but wait for it… he didn’t stay free for long! Just a day later, on Wednesday, he found himself back behind bars. Talk about a rollercoaster ride! As of now, he remains incarcerated.
