Longs Community Comes Together to Support Local Student

In the charming town of Longs, a heartfelt story of community solidarity has recently unfolded, showcasing the power of kindness and support. Laverna Knox, the driving force behind Neighbors Helping Neighbors, a local homeless shelter, is making waves by lending a hand to those in need. From organizing food drives to embarking on trips to western North Carolina to assist those affected by natural disasters, Knox is a true hero in her community.

A Van from Above

One of the most touching stories to emerge from Knox’s selfless endeavors involves Rashon Owen, a sophomore at Horry Georgetown Technical College. Owen has been navigating the challenges of getting to classes and work while relying on an electric scooter for transportation. The struggles of catching rides or occasionally resorting to Uber have weighed heavily on him, leading to daily stressors that are all too familiar for many students.

In a twist of fate, Owen’s situation took a turn for the better when his mother, Denise Williams, posted on Facebook asking for help in finding a car for her son. Little did they know that Knox had just received a van from an insurance company a week earlier. After seeing Williams’ post and recognizing an opportunity to make a difference, Knox sprang into action. “He said he was riding a scooter back and forth to work and different things, and I said ‘it’s yours.’ Told him to come and get it,” she recalled.

Overwhelming Gratitude

When Owen received the news, he was, understandably, overwhelmed with gratitude. “My scooter, the charger blew up, so this van came right in the nick of time,” he said. “This is a huge blessing for me and my mom. We will not take it for granted.” With the new van at his disposal, Owen now has the freedom to commute to class and work without the stress of unreliable transportation.

Knox expressed admiration for Owen’s determination. Despite the challenges he faced while using his scooter, he never gave up on his education or his job. “Even though he was on a scooter, he went to work,” she said. “He was determined to continue his studies and get to work.” This determination inspired Knox to take action, providing Owen with the independence and mobility he so desperately needed.

The Power of Community Support

This heartwarming tale is a testament to the outstanding spirit of Longs’ residents and the unwavering support within the community. Knox’s work with Neighbors Helping Neighbors exemplifies how one person can create a ripple effect, helping to uplift others around them. Whether it’s providing shelter, organizing fundraisers, or reaching out to individuals in need, Knox is all about turning compassion into action.

For those looking to contribute to the amazing work happening at Neighbors Helping Neighbors, there are numerous ways to get involved, from donations to volunteering. Helping Knox continues to empower and uplift those in the Longs community can bring hope and change to lives that need it most.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, in a world that sometimes feels disconnected, stories like those of Laverna Knox and Rashon Owen remind us of the importance of giving back. Small acts of kindness can lead to big changes, and when a community comes together, there’s no limit to what can be achieved. As Owen reflects on this unexpected and life-changing gift, it’s clear that the spirit of generosity is alive and well in Longs.
