Legends Drive Residents Approve Special Tax District for Road Improvements

Legends Drive Residents Vote in Favor of Special Tax District

Community vote paves the way for crucial road improvements

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. – The residents of the Legends Drive community have voted in favor of establishing a special tax district during a special election held on Tuesday. The primary focus of the election was the fate of proposed road improvements along Legends Drive, a privately owned stretch of infrastructure.

Approval of the Controversial Resolution

The primary issue in the special election was a controversial resolution previously approved by the Horry County Council. The passage of the resolution might established a “special tax district,” requiring residents to pay an additional tax of about $188 annually for the next 15 years. It is believed that these funds would go towards significant road improvement efforts along Legends Drive.

The resolution has stirred a wave of discontent among some residents, who argue that the road owner should shoulder financial responsibility for enhancement efforts. Despite the council’s approval of the resolution, residents ultimately had the final say on the matter during the Tuesday ballot.

Special Election Results

The polls closed at 7:00 p.m., and the results revealed a significant preference for the special tax district. The final tally showed 385 votes for the tax, opposed to 182 against. Upon confirmation of these results, the Horry County Council will hold a meeting to formally accept the decision of the Legends Drive community.

Election Day Operations

Philip Gengler, the election poll clerk overseeing the proceedings, stated, “operations were the same as any other election.” However, he emphasized that only residents of Legends Drive were eligible to cast a vote. By 2:30 p.m. on the election day, Gengler reported that approximately 500 ballots had been cast, including early voting ballots and in-person votes at the Parkland Clubhouse.

Even though the community’s decision on the special tax district was clear, the Horry County Council meeting to formalize the agreement will seal the future of the proposed road improvements along Legends Drive.

Providing context for potential tax increases can help residents understand the value such measures may bring. Road enhancements improve access, safety, and property value, which can benefit long-term residence within a community. In the case of the Legends Drive community, it appears that a majority of residents felt the potential advantages justified the additional tax burden.
