Get ready, Myrtle Beach! This Wednesday night into Thursday morning, we’re in for a treat as the sky hosts a beautiful full moon, famously known as the Hunter’s Moon. This isn’t just any old full moon though; it’s a supermoon, which means it’s going to be the brightest moon we’ll see all year!
So, what exactly is a supermoon? Well, it happens when the Moon’s orbit brings it closest to Earth, a point called perigee. For us here in Myrtle Beach, perigee will occur at 8:48 PM on Wednesday, putting the moon a cozy 221,938 miles away from us. With this combo, you can expect that it will look a whopping 14% brighter than other moons throughout the year!
While the moon officially reaches full status at 7:26 AM on Thursday, the prime time for viewing will be right around moonrise on Wednesday evening. Keep your eyes on the eastern horizon at 6:11 PM—that’s when the moon will rise just about a half-hour before sunset. It’s the perfect excuse for a little evening stroll on the beach or maybe a cozy night on the porch with friends and family!
The October full moon is called the Hunter’s Moon because historically, this time of year marked when farmers would harvest their crops, and the bright moonlight made it easier for hunters to see in the evenings as they prepared for winter. There are also some additional interesting names for this month’s full moon, like the Travel Moon, Dying Grass Moon, Sanguine Moon, and the Blood Moon—the latter named for the changing colors of the fall leaves.
Whether you choose to gather some friends for a backyard bonfire while keeping an eye on the sky, or you head to the beach to soak in the sights, don’t miss out on this stunning lunar display. It’s a wonderful reminder to appreciate the beauty of nature that surrounds us, right here in Myrtle Beach!
So, get your cameras ready and maybe grab a cozy blanket. Snap some photos, kick back, and let’s enjoy the magnificent Hunter’s Moon together! This is the last of four consecutive supermoons, so let’s make it special. Who knows? You might even catch a shooting star dancing across the moonlit sky!
Whatever your plans are, make sure to take a moment to gaze at the gorgeous moon lighting up our beloved beaches. Happy moon-gazing, Myrtle Beach!
