Five high school students from the Horry and Georgetown County school systems will have their art seen by those traveling to and from Myrtle Beach, thanks to the annual Myrtle Beach International Airport Student Art Contest. This year, twenty pieces were submitted from six schools throughout the two counties.
The artworks followed the theme of celebrating the diverse ecology of South Carolina. The winners, who were chosen by popular vote via social media, received a cash prize and will have their artwork displayed in the airport. The airport held an award ceremony on Thursday, inviting Miley Watts of Socastee High School to accept her first-place award for “Carolina Wren with Yellow Jasmine.”
The airport also awarded Rylee O’Leary from the Academy for the Arts, Science & Technology for the piece “Otterly” and Arella Elmore of North Myrtle Beach High for “Coastal Turtle.” Rylie Rhodes of St. James High and Ellyn Fox of Waccamaw High were granted honorable mentions for “Colors of a Myrtle Beach Morning” and “Brookgreen’s Entrance,” respectively.
