It’s been a whirlwind of a night here in Myrtle Beach as State Senator Luke Rankin positions himself for yet another term in the South Carolina State Senate. The air was thick with anticipation as voters braved the polls, and by 8:48 p.m. Tuesday night, the Associated Press had called the race in Rankin’s favor. Talk about putting a cherry on top of the day!
According to preliminary results from the South Carolina Election Commission, Rankin has once again shown strong support from his constituents, snagging a hefty 68.27% of the votes, which totals up to an impressive 33,178 votes. His Democrat challenger, Pete John Bember, came in with a noteworthy 31.5%, totaling 15,309 votes. And let’s not forget about the write-ins! A small portion, .22%, or 109 votes, were for those brave enough to go off-script. Now, while these numbers aren’t certified just yet, they certainly paint a promising picture for Rankin.
For those who might not know, Luke Rankin has been a major player in the South Carolina political scene for over 30 years, serving Horry County with a focus on legislative reform and community improvements. During the last legislative session, he sponsored 14 bills, and while four made it through, ten found themselves left in the dust. It’s all part of the game in politics, but Rankin seems to take it in stride.
Rankin, who holds both a bachelor’s and law degree from the University of South Carolina, isn’t just another name on the ballot. He currently chairs the senate’s Judiciary Committee and is active on several other committees including Banking and Insurance, Education, Ethics, and Transportation. His diverse experience lends him insight into the various needs of his constituency, and he prides himself on approaching government with common sense.
Rankin has always emphasized teamwork and an earnest effort to improve quality of life. Earlier, on his campaign website, he shared: “It takes teamwork and a common-sense approach to make meaningful progress and reform in Government to achieve that brighter future.” Well, that’s a pretty rallying cry for those who want change!
Rankin’s journey to secure the Republican ticket wasn’t a walk in the park, especially after a closely contested primary race back in June. But resilience seems to be his game. Fast forward to Tuesday, and the excitement in the air was palpable as supporters cheered for yet another four years of his leadership.
As the dust begins to settle and ballots are certified, residents of Horry County are left to ponder what lies ahead. With Rankin at the helm, there’s bound to be ongoing discussions about legislative priorities, community welfare, and perhaps even unexpected changes. It will be interesting to see how he chooses to navigate his new term, especially amidst evolving local and state issues.
For now, residents can hold their heads high knowing that they participated in their local democracy. Here’s to the future of Horry County and the journey ahead with the familiar face of Luke Rankin leading the way!
