Heartwarming Heroes from Myrtle Beach Bring Hope to North Carolina
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Recently, some incredible folks from our very own Myrtle Beach rolled up their sleeves and headed to the mountains of North Carolina, where they became true heroes. These amazing volunteers, part of a nonprofit called Joint Task Force K9s, teamed up with another nonprofit called Heroes For Humanity to assist in a situation that no one wants to face: the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
As the storm wreaked havoc on the community in Yadkin County, just west of Winston-Salem, these dedicated volunteers gathered their team of eight skilled dogs and five handlers. They all joined forces for the very first time, ready to brave the rugged terrain and do some much-needed work. And let me tell you, what they experienced was something they’ll never forget.
A Gritty and Gut-Wrenching Mission
According to Keith Holland, the founder of Joint Task Force K9, the devastation they encountered was beyond anything he had seen before. “I’ve done multiple natural disasters,” he recalled. “I have worked floods as well, but this was by far the worst I’ve ever seen on the ground.” Keith really hit the nail on the head, saying it took our country coming together to start the healing process. It’s truly tough to see such sorrow all around, and he noted this recovery journey would be a long one for everyone involved.
Daring and determined, Holland and his loyal pup, Quill, trekked about 20 miles over four days, facing rough terrains that tested their limits. Keith shared, “Honestly, it was the worst I’ve ever seen… the smell of death and destruction was overwhelming.” It was a heart-wrenching sight, especially when they encountered personal items, clothes hanging from trees, and reports of animals caught up in the wreckage.
Four Days of Dedication and Teamwork
While their mission revolved around recovering the bodies of those tragically lost, it was the bond between the handlers and their dogs that shone through in such a painful time. “The sights that you saw were clothes in the trees,” Holland described. Thankfully, many of the bodies had been previously cleared, but that only meant the dogs were tasked with finding the missing ones. The work was tough, and the dogs were exhausted, but they all stepped up to the plate, showing the power of resilience and teamwork.
What was truly touching was the warm welcome they received from the local community. Folks in North Carolina were incredibly grateful to have them there, offering them shelter, food, and support. “We camped out on their property, and they wanted to help and take care of us,” Keith mentioned. It’s heartening to see how people come together during difficult times, isn’t it?
Looking Ahead: More Work to Do
In true heroic fashion, Keith mentioned they plan to return to North Carolina within the month to continue assisting the community in rebuilding and recovering.
