The Heart of Myrtle Beach Shines Through Adversity
Myrtle Beach – As we all know, when disaster strikes, it often brings out the best in us. Recently, a group of local volunteers from our beloved Myrtle Beach set off on a mission to assist those affected by Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina. Their journey turned out to be quite the adventure, filled with both struggles and inspiring moments that remind us of the strength of community.
A Rocky Start to a Compassionate Journey
Everything kicked off bright and early on October 3rd at 7 a.m., when the caravan of volunteers loaded up and hit the road bound for Hendersonville, expecting a simple five-hour drive. But as anyone who’s traveled through our area knows, things don’t always go as planned. Just two hours into the trip, disaster struck: a pair of tires blew, and the axle broke off their 20-foot trailer packed with much-needed supplies.
The clock was ticking, with a curfew set for 8 p.m. in western North Carolina, and folks like Deena Moore in Polk County were waiting for help. “It’s just been really hard,” she shared, capturing the struggles faced by many.
Community Spirit Rising
But when the going got tough, the tough got creative! Volunteers quickly hatched a backup plan. They transferred their supplies from the damaged trailer into a U-Haul — which had been generously donated for the trip. And if that wasn’t enough, they were offered a bed for the night by kind-hearted strangers in Spartanburg, who even whipped up a hearty dinner. Isn’t that just classic southern hospitality?
Overcoming Hurdles
As they continued their journey on the morning of October 4th, they faced another challenge when cell phone service faded into the mountains. But the volunteers, fueled by their purpose, switched to walkie-talkies to stay in touch. And guess what? Their determination never wavered!
Myrtle Beach’s own KJ Jordan summed it all up beautifully, saying, “You know, bottles of water, a toothbrush, deodorant—these little things we take for granted are in desperate need here.” The team’s mission was to spread support and comfort to those who felt a world away from normality.
Making an Impact in Rural North Carolina
The volunteers made an unexpected turn towards Rutherford County near Lake Lure, where Jordan felt an immediate connection, having grown up there. They landed at Rock Springs Baptist Church, where Isaac Alredge welcomed the team with open arms. “We’ve been trying to get some supplies out to the community, but with the lack of communication, a lot of people haven’t been able to reach their families,” he explained.
It was at that moment that something truly heartwarming happened. The Myrtle Beach team unloaded half of their supplies to be distributed by the church. A remote church in North Carolina, struck by a devastating storm, was now being helped by our Grand Strand neighbors. Alredge, visibly moved, expressed, “You guys had supplies ready for us… I almost broke in tears.”
Love in Action
But they didn’t stop there. Jordan handed Alredge $1,000 in cash for a neighborhood lunch, all raised from donations by folks right here in Myrtle Beach. Reflecting on the trip, he said, “I feel like Satan was trying to prevent us from getting here, but God had a plan for us.” Talk about making a difference!
Everything Happens for a Reason
In the end, this journey showed us all that no matter how bumpy the road may get, Myrtle Beach’s spirit of giving and compassion shines through. “Everything happened for a reason,” Jordan concluded. And indeed, it did. This mission not only touched the lives in North Carolina but also reminded those of us back home of the incredible power of community.
