Emails reveal HCS refused offers to buy weapons detection system for schools
Horry County Schools is the third largest school district in South Carolina, yet it remains one of the few districts without a weapons detection system. The district did emphasize it has magnetometers or metal detectors that can detect firearms, knives, and other contraband items. But they can only scan students one at a time, with student belongings requiring separate searches.
School Leaders Denied Offers for Security Upgrades
Following an incident where a middle school student brought a loaded gun to Myrtle Beach Middle School, it was revealed through Freedom of Information Act Requests that school leaders and staff members had privately discussed weapons detection systems. Salespeople had approached HCS about these systems as early as June 2022.
Delay in Implementing Security Measures
Despite several offers, school leaders did not present the idea of a weapons detection system to the school board. When the Horry County Schools Procurement Officer contacted Spartanburg District 5 about their weapons detection systems, they quickly declined to explore the option at that time.
Parental Concerns
Parents, like Meredith Kennedy, whose son attends Myrtle Beach Middle School, are concerned about the lack of security measures in place and have advocated for a weapons detection system in schools. Despite some interest from HCS, the district ultimately decided against implementing such a system.
Committee Formed to Address Security Concerns
Subsequent to the recent security incident, a committee was established to address security concerns. However, it remains uncertain if this committee will propose new security recommendations. The delay in introducing a weapons detection system was tied to a security audit that commenced in November 2022, with results shared with school board members in February 2023.
Amid ongoing worries about school safety, the community is urging prompt action to enhance security measures and safeguard the well-being of students and staff in Horry County Schools.
