Sponsor Our ArticlesFour FSU students became heroes on March 1 when they saved a man who collapsed from a heart attack while playing golf. Their quick response and CPR efforts helped stabilize the victim, Todd Watkins, until paramedics arrived, demonstrating bravery and the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Following the incident, the students formed a connection with Watkins and were later recognized for their extraordinary actions.
On March 1, a sunny day meant for fun and relaxation morphed into a life-saving adventure for four Florida State University (FSU) students. While teeing off at Hilaman Golf Course, what started as a simple game of golf quickly escalated into a dramatic rescue mission that showcased their courage and quick thinking.
As the group of friends, all FSU seniors, savored the warm sun and the company of each other, Brandon Moore, one of the students, spotted a man waving frantically from up a hill. This was not just a casual wave; it was a desperate cry for help. The man, later identified as 61-year-old Todd Watkins, had collapsed unexpectedly due to a heart attack.
Watkins had been on the course practicing alone, gearing up for an upcoming tournament. With the scenic backdrop of the course, no one could have predicted the unfolding emergency. The students immediately jumped into action, calling 911 while racing to help Watkins, who was found unconscious on the grass.
Without skipping a beat, these heroic students started administering CPR, which proved crucial in this dire situation. For a tense 10 minutes, they worked tirelessly to keep Watkins alive until professional help could arrive. Among them was Tommy Provenzano, a CPR-certified lifeguard who played a key role in the instinctive rescue effort.
When the paramedics finally arrived, they quickly took over, transporting Watkins to a nearby hospital. The medical team worked diligently, using various techniques to stabilize him and restore his heart rhythm. Thanks to the rapid response from the students, Watkins had a fighting chance for recovery.
After spending a week under intensive care, primarily to assist with brain recovery, Watkins was released from the hospital. Remarkably, he had no recollection of the events that led to his hospitalization. His family stepped in to recount the incredible story of how those brave students had rushed in when it mattered most.
Mary, Watkins’ wife, was astonished that a casual day of golf had turned into such a critical moment for her husband. The cause of the heart attack was later discovered to be partly genetic, leaving the family struggling with the shocking news. Mary hailed the students as heroes, feeling that their presence that day was perfectly timed and perhaps even miraculous.
In a touching gesture, the students visited Watkins in the ICU just the next day, eager to build a friendship after he had recovered. Their desire to connect not only reflects their admirable character but signifies the unique bond that can form during a crisis. It’s a heartfelt reminder of the impact people can have on each other’s lives in difficult moments.
In recognition of their extraordinary bravery, local Emergency Medical Services have announced plans to honor the students with a citizen’s award. Mary expressed immense gratitude, acknowledging how the students’ swift actions made a significant difference on that fateful day. One family member noted that these courageous students would forever be an important part of their family’s story, a symbol of hope and heroism that emerged from what could have been a devastating tragedy.
This incredible story serves as a beautiful reminder of how life can take unexpected turns. For golf enthusiasts and beyond, it highlights not only the pleasures of the game but also the importance of staying prepared and looking out for each other, no matter where life leads us. Moments like these remind us that heroism often appears when we least expect it, turning ordinary days into extraordinary tales of courage and connection.
