Discover the Golfing Charm of Fripp Island, South Carolina

Fripp Island, S.C. – A hidden gem nestled along South Carolina’s gorgeous coastline, Fripp Island is rapidly earning its stripes as a fine golf destination, all while maintaining a family-friendly atmosphere. While many flock to the bustling Myrtle Beach area for their golf trips, Fripp Island offers a unique charm that’s equally appealing, especially for those looking to escape the crowds.

Getting There and Getting Lost

Getting to Fripp Island isn’t the typical “just drive down the highway” scenario. It’s an adventure that starts with a sense of excitement. As I made my way, Waze chirping directions, I couldn’t help but feel a dash of uncertainty creep in, even as my wife and daughter snoozed blissfully in the backseat. The bright lights of Beaufort faded as we glided down secluded, two-lane roads, passed by ghostly live oaks, and crossed over sleepy marsh-lined creeks. Every turn added to this unique experience of being ‘lost while found’, as we approached our destination.

As the civilization of Beaufort vanished behind us, the island slowly made its debut with a squat gatehouse marking our arrival. It felt like entering an enchanted landscape. Here we were, on the very brink of a lovely pre-Thanksgiving vacation.

The Courses: Ocean Point and Ocean Creek

Fripp Island doesn’t just offer a beach with sun and sand, it boasts two incredible golf courses, Ocean Point and Ocean Creek. Ocean Point, designed by George Cobb and opened in 1964, recently underwent a stunning $2 million renovation to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The renovation included the addition of a more beach-like feel, with over five acres of sugary sand and thousands of coastal grasses. Imagine playing a round of golf that flows gracefully from ocean to forest and back to the ocean again!

The beauty of the surroundings is matched by the challenges presented by the course. Ocean Point may be shorter than many other courses out there, but its holes are designed to tempt even the most conservative of players. From large, well-placed bunkers to brilliant green complexes, you’ll find yourself both challenged and invigorated.

On the flip side, we have Ocean Creek, a younger sibling to Ocean Point that packs a punch. Opened in 1994 and designed by PGA Champion Davis Love III, this course is no slouch either. It boasts fewer ocean views, but the stunning marshland holes on the front nine make it an equal contender. If you’re a golfer searching for a challenge, check out the 275-yard 4th hole; it will have you questioning if you should go for it or play it safe! No matter your choice, it seems this hole is all about fun.

More Than Just Golfing

Although golf is a major highlight, Fripp Island isn’t just about teeing off. The area is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a multitude of activities. From fishing and boating to tennis and biking, there’s truly something for everyone. On our family trip, we enjoyed some lawn games at the lively Beach Club, which bustled with energy, making us feel right at home.

The island life isn’t just for golf lovers; families can explore the delightful Nature Center or relax on the quiet, wide beaches. Fripp’s relatively undeveloped beaches are a huge plus, offering a tranquil retreat complete with spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Local knowledge suggests heading down to Skull Point for one of the best sunset views, and trust me, it’s a memory you won’t want to miss.

Dine, Stay, and Play

When it comes to accommodations, Fripp Island offers numerous rental houses, some managed directly by the resort. If you’re lucky enough to stay in a member-owned property, you’ll enjoy access to the golf courses and beach club, enhancing your overall experience. Just a friendly piece of advice: be sure to read the fine print before booking, as not all rentals allow for on-site activities.

Dining might be one area where Fripp Island could improve, with some visitors noting limited options, especially during the shoulder seasons. Those planning a longer stay may want to venture into Beaufort at least once for a change of scenery and meal choices.

The Future Looks Bright

Exciting developments are on the horizon for Fripp Island Resort, especially after a change in ownership in 2023. With plans for renovations of dining facilities and the creation of a fun putting course by renowned architect Agustin Piza, the island aims to enhance its appeal further.

While Fripp Island may not rival the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach, its low-key charm and myriad activities make it a top contender for family vacations and golf retreats alike. As long as it maintains its unique character and integrity, Fripp Island will continue to attract visitors looking for a slice of paradise.
