Exciting Renovations at Nardmoor Transform Lives for Veterans in Myrtle Beach

Exciting New Changes for Veterans in Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach, S.C., is buzzing with positive news after a two-year wait. The long-anticipated renovations at Nardmoor, a facility designed to help homeless veterans, are finally complete! With an investment of over $1.3 million, this place has transformed into a beacon of hope for many. And it’s not just a building; it’s a place that’s changing lives!

What’s Special About Nardmoor?

Located on the corner of Hawthorne Lane and 65th Avenue North, Nardmoor currently houses 40 veterans. But here’s something to highlight: this amazing facility has served about 600 veterans through its program and successfully helped many find permanent housing. Wow! That’s a huge impact on our community.

Vietnam Army Veteran Daniel Brunson, who has called Nardmoor home for the past three months, shared his experience. He expressed how it feels like “a home away from home.” Daniel came to Nardmoor after facing various challenges and was recommended by a local commander. “They treat you like you’re at home. They take care of you,” he said, emphasizing the supportive environment. “It’s a wonderful program that helps you restart your life,” he added with a heartfelt smile.

Feeding the Soul

What’s even better? The veterans at Nardmoor enjoy three nutritious meals a day, thanks to the newly updated kitchen facilities. Good food is essential for anyone, but especially for those who are on their journey to recovery and stability. Daniel mentioned he’ll miss not only the friends he’s made but the delicious meals served at Nardmoor. Can you blame him?

A Vision of Support

The CEO of ECHO, Joey Smoak, shared a bit about the vision behind this renovation. Joey, who has his own journey from homelessness to recovery, knows firsthand the importance of these programs. “I was in the same situation,” he said. It’s clear that his personal experiences fuel this mission to help others. Joey mentioned that nine out of ten veterans who come to the facility have faced challenges like substance use or PTSD, which makes support and understanding vital.

A Growing Need in Our Community

It’s concerning to note that Horry County has the highest number of homeless veterans in the nation relative to its population size. That’s why places like Nardmoor are so essential. The non-profit organization behind Nardmoor bought the facility back in 2019, turning a once-vacant building (that used to be a nursing home) into a safe haven for veterans in need. They did a remarkable job cleaning it up and making it feel welcoming.

Future Plans and Opportunities

The future looks bright! Nardmoor is planning to convert six offices into efficiency apartments for veterans who may need a bit more time before moving on. This thoughtful approach shows a real commitment to the well-being of veterans.

For those of you who want to get involved, whether by donating or knowing someone who could benefit, there’s plenty of opportunity to help! Every bit counts in making a difference in the lives of these heroes who served our country.

Wrapping It Up

So there you have it, Myrtle Beach! The renovations at Nardmoor are more than just physical improvements; they symbolize hope and support for veterans who need it most. With new facilities and dedicated staff who have walked the same path, this community is ready to lend a hand in helping our veterans reclaim their lives.

With people like Daniel finding their way back to permanent housing, it’s clear that Nardmoor is making a real difference. Let’s celebrate these improvements and continue supporting our veterans who have given so much for all of us!
