Exciting News for Conway Residents!

Hey there, Conway! We have some exciting developments happening in your neighborhood that could breathe new life into a once-bustling shopping area. That’s right, the Coastal Centre Shopping Center, long dormant and sadly lacking in foot traffic, is set to undergo an incredible transformation.

A New Beginning for Coastal Centre

Just a month ago, RP Coastal Centre LLC, a company based out of Tennessee, made headlines by purchasing the Coastal Centre Shopping Center for a whopping $14 million. This purchase includes various spaces that many locals will remember, including the old K-Mart, Goody’s, and Winn-Dixie that used to stand proudly along the intersection of Church and 16th Streets. Talk about some good memories, huh?

Green Light from City Council

Now, here’s where it gets even more interesting! On Monday, the City Council of Conway granted the new owners the green light to explore tax incentives that could facilitate the redevelopment of this site. What’s more, they’ll be working under the South Carolina Abandoned Buildings Revitalization Act. This Act allows property owners to apply for certification if they own an abandoned building, which can significantly assist them in navigating tax credits they may qualify for. Sounds like a win-win for everyone involved!

Before We Build—Let’s Clean It Up

However, there’s a little more to the story. Before any shiny new stores make their entrance, RP Coastal Centre LLC is also seeking a permit from the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) for a voluntary cleanup of the site. That’s right, folks, the attraction isn’t just about new storefronts; it’s also about ensuring the area is safe and sound for everyone.

According to the SCDES public notice, RP Coastal Centre LLC intends to convert the property into improved commercial space that fits with the character of the area. But hold your horses! This property comes with a past that involves businesses like gas stations and automotive repairs, which means there might be some environmental issues lurking under the surface. To tackle this, Coastal will perform tests on the soil and groundwater. If they find any significant contamination, they’ll be obligated to take measures to protect both human health and the surrounding environment. Safety first, right?

Time for Community Input

For those of you eager to voice your thoughts—there is a chance for public comment! The input period for this request is open until November 27, providing an excellent opportunity for residents to share their opinions or concerns about the redevelopment plans. This is your chance to contribute to the conversation about what you want to see in your community!

What’s Next for Conway?

As we await the outcome, one thing is clear: change is on the horizon for Conway’s Coastal Centre Shopping Center. With new leadership onboard, tax incentives in play, and a commitment to cleaning up the area, there’s every reason to feel hopeful about what the future holds. Whether you’re looking forward to new shops, restaurants, or recreational spaces, it seems like the old Coastal Centre might soon be a place bustling with activity once again.

Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops! It’s truly an exciting time in Conway, and the community’s voice will play a crucial role in shaping this next chapter for the Coastal Centre Shopping Center.
