Excitement Builds in Myrtle Beach as Election Day Approaches

It’s that time again! In just 21 days, folks all over the country will be heading to the polls to cast their ballots for the next President of the United States. Right here in Myrtle Beach, the countdown to Nov. 5 is in full swing, and the energy is palpable!

Election Preparations in Full Swing

We had a chat with Horry County’s Director of Registration and Elections, Sandra Martin, who mentioned, “The office is full up front, plus the phones are ringing off the hook.” Talk about a busy time! With all the election equipment and supplies getting lined up, it’s clear that there’s a lot going on behind the scenes to ensure everything runs smoothly. And if you’re trying to reach the registration office for your questions, be prepared to show a bit of patience. Sandra says, “The girls are doing all they can do!”

Hurricane Helene and Voter Registration

Well, Myrtle Beach, it seems we have Hurricane Helene to thank for a bit of a surprise! The storm pushed the state’s voter registration deadline back by two weeks, leading to a spike in registrations. Isn’t that interesting? More folks are stepping up to make their voices heard, which is always a good thing!

What to Expect for Voter Turnout

Now, let’s talk turnout. Justin Vaughn, a Political Science professor over at Coastal Carolina University, predicts that South Carolina’s voter turnout will be similar to the last presidential election, which saw numbers in the high 60s. While it’s exciting to vote, Vaughn points out that our state doesn’t see the same kind of competition that other battleground states do. He explains, “Most people who come out to vote will be coming out, not to weigh in on a highly competitive race in South Carolina, but you know, to do their civic duty.”

Firm Stances and Absentee Voting

One of the highlights that Vaughn mentioned is the firm stances that voters have on their preferred candidates. According to him, “There’s very little that either campaign seems to be able to do this time… there’s been so much happening lately, including assassination attempts and major debates.” Seems like people have made up their minds! But there’s an interesting twist – absentee voting is on the rise. With the last election happening in the middle of a pandemic, many turned to absentee ballots, and this trend seems to be sticking around, albeit not as dramatically as before. Martin added that they’ve seen a significant number of folks requesting absentee ballots this time around too, saying, “Everybody’s calling in wanting an absentee ballot, and we’re up to, I think, close to eleven thousand for those.”

Early Voting is Just Around the Corner

Let’s save the best for last – early voting starts exactly a week from today. How exciting is that?! If you want more info on early voting, don’t forget to check out your local guide. This is your chance to take part in our democracy and let your voice be heard.

Get Ready, Myrtle Beach!
