Damariscotta Says Goodbye to Beloved Resident Margaret Bartlett at Age 88

Damariscotta is mourning the loss of a cherished community member, Margaret Bartlett, who passed away peacefully at her home on the morning of February 28, 2023, at the age of 88. After a brave battle with complications from lung cancer, Margaret’s family shared the heartfelt news of her passing.

A Life to Remember

Born in the picturesque town of Gardiner, Maine, on February 14, 1935, Margaret was the daughter of the late Francis “Frank” and Evelyn (Cobb) O’Connor. She grew up surrounded by love, and family was always at the center of her life. After completing her studies at Edward Little High School in Auburn, where she graduated in 1953, Margaret embarked on a journey that would lead her to a vibrant life filled with joy, laughter, and deep friendships.

A Love Story

On June 24, 1962, she married the love of her life, Bruce Bartlett, and they shared a beautiful partnership that lasted 56 wonderful years. Together they created a warm and inviting home in Auburn, where they made countless friends during their 14 years there.

In 1978, the couple decided to move to their forever home in Damariscotta, where Margaret would spend the rest of her life surrounded by the beauty of coastal Maine.

More Than Just an Employee

Margaret had a fulfilling career as a bookkeeper, lending her expertise to several companies and organizations including Snow’s Inc. and Austin Associates in Auburn. Her time at Lincoln Academy in Newcastle was particularly special, as she proudly oversaw the high school years of her two sons from the front office. Many remember her as a familiar face in school activities and as a supportive presence for students and parents alike.

A Heart of Gold

Margaret’s warmth and hospitality were legendary; her door was always open to friends and neighbors. She loved hosting gatherings filled with laughter, good food, and late-night card games—an activity that brought many great memories to those fortunate enough to be invited. Her love for reading and knitting was well-known and she was an avid bridge player, enjoying her weekly games with friends.

Family and Community

Though Margaret faced some significant losses throughout her life, including the passing of her beloved husband and siblings, her family continued to be her rock. She is survived by her sister Mary Richardson of New Gloucester, Maine, and her brother Robert O’Connor from Minot. Margaret’s legacy lives on through her sons, Chris Bartlett and his wife Connie of Eastport, and Craig Bartlett and his wife Kristie of Santa Rosa, California. The family shares five grandchildren—Jamison, Jordan, Mary, Sarah, and Katherine—who will carry forward her spirit and love.

A Community United in Grief

Margaret’s family is grateful for the warmth and support from friends in Damariscotta, especially during her later years. They also wish to thank the compassionate staff from Hospice and Comfort Keepers, who provided care during her illness.

Celebrating a Life Well-Lived

In accordance with her wishes, there will be no formal service at this time. However, her family plans to gather with loved ones for a celebration of her life in the warmer months, continuing the spirit of community that Margaret so cherished. Arrangements are being handled by the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home in Damariscotta.

For those wishing to honor Margaret’s memory, the family suggests making a donation to the Skidompha Library or The Sussman House Volunteer Fund for Hospice, rather than sending flowers.

Messages of condolence for the family can be shared at http://www.StrongHancock.com.
