Orangeburg, South Carolina – CSU Suffers Tough Loss Against SC State Bulldogs

In a highly anticipated matchup on December 9, 2024, the Charleston Southern Buccaneers faced off against the South Carolina State Bulldogs at the Sumpter Gymnasium. The Buccaneers, who previously lost to the Bulldogs by just two points last season, were seeking redemption. However, the game did not go as planned, culminating in a 63-81 defeat for CSU.

A Slow Start Haunts the Buccaneers

From the onset, the Buccaneers struggled to find their rhythm. The team faced significant shooting difficulties, leading to a challenging first half. By halftime, Charleston Southern found themselves trailing by 14 points after managing to put only 29 points on the board compared to SC State’s 43.

Coach Saah Nimley’s squad had been known for their impressive rebounding throughout the season, and they continued this trend with an overall total of 39 rebounds compared to the Bulldogs’ 33. Nonetheless, rebounding alone could not compensate for the considerable struggles in shooting and ball control.

Shooting Struggles and Turnovers

The Buccaneers’ three-point shooting was particularly concerning, as they made only 2 out of 16 attempts. This lack of accuracy kept them from closing the gap against their opponents. Moreover, turnovers proved disastrous for Charleston Southern. The Bucs relinquished the ball 17 times, while SC State capitalized on their opportunities with only five turnovers.

Standout Performers

Taje’ Kelly, who was recognized as the Big South Player of the Week just one week prior, led the Buccaneers with 25 points in the game. Additionally, he secured 10 rebounds, marking his third double-double of the regular season. Junior big man Reis Jones also had a commendable performance, contributing 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Looking Ahead

Following the tough defeat, CSU will have a break before returning to action. Their next game is scheduled for December 19, 2024, where they will take on the Lions of North Alabama in Florence, Alabama. With the Bucs looking to regroup after this setback, Coach Nimley will seek to make necessary adjustments ahead of their next matchup.
