In the heart of Conway, a remarkable educational journey has unfolded over the past two decades at the Scholars Academy. This trailblazing program, launched in 2003, has paved the way for high-achieving students to stretch their academic wings beyond the confines of a traditional high school setting. You could say this program was a game changer! It offers a unique blend of Advanced Placement (AP) courses and college classes through a partnership with Coastal Carolina University.
Back in its inaugural year, the Scholars Academy welcomed just 22 students, introducing them to a collegiate atmosphere that was both thrilling and overwhelming. “It was like being thrown right into the fire,” said former student Michael Foltz, who graduated in 2019. But as the years rolled on, the program blossomed, attracting more students eager for a challenging and rewarding education. Today, the academy has grown to almost ten times its original enrollment, recognizing its sky-high standards in academic excellence.
Fast forward to now, and the Scholars Academy has officially become the No. 1-ranked high school in South Carolina according to the latest state report cards! This year marked a milestone as it became a standalone school, allowing its performance to shine on its own merit.
The current graduating class of 2024 has racked up impressive figures, including over $7.7 million in scholarship offers! Can you believe that? The Academy has truly helped launch students toward their future endeavors. Three students even earned the prestigious title of QuestBridge scholars, opening the doors to elite colleges across the country.
Former teacher Vencie Maxey, who helped launch the program, recalls how different it was back in the day. “We were the best-kept secret,” she chuckled, reflecting on how the program was often overlooked until it recently gained wider recognition. “Now, we’ve thrown the door wide open, and people are beginning to see what we have to offer,” she added.
Students at Scholars Academy are required to tackle a rigorous curriculum, completing a minimum of seven AP classes along with fulfilling community service hours each year. While the pressure can be a bit intense, former students emphasize that the experience ends up being worthwhile. “It taught me time management,” shared Caleb Jordan, a graduate from 2019. “I graduated debt-free and fast-tracked my education.”
Such opportunities are not offered everywhere, and several alumni agree that Scholars Academy provided them with an advantage. “It’s like you’re preparing for college without realizing it,” said Sarah Bell, an alumna from 2012. “I transitioned into an honors college with ease.”
The hallmark of Scholars Academy isn’t just its academic rigor; it’s the nurturing environment it fosters. Students often mention the strong sense of community, friendships, and support they developed during their time there. “Having smaller class sizes really helped us connect with teachers and each other,” recalled Lisa Pieterse, who moved to the U.S. from South Africa and found her place among the other gifted students.
Even with the high expectations, the overall school spirit brings a sense of camaraderie and fulfillment that many students cherish long after graduation. Being involved in their home schools also allowed students to maintain friendships and enjoy extracurricular activities, making sure they stayed well-rounded.
Despite facing some skepticism during its transition to a standalone institution, the Scholars Academy has proven its worth, continuously delivering outstanding results while enhancing student experiences. As Principal Norman McQueen says, “You’ve got to want to do it for yourself.” The determination seen in students and teachers alike underlines the Academy’s commitment to education.
With accolades accumulating and excellent student performance, Scholars Academy has set a high bar for educational excellence. As more generations come through its doors, one thing is certain—the future is bright for the Scholars Academy and its students.
