Conway, SC – The Scholars Academy at Coastal Carolina University has made headlines recently for achieving the coveted title of South Carolina’s top-ranked high school. This recognition comes as the academy celebrates its remarkable 20-year journey since its inception in 2003. Initially designed to provide high-achieving students with a unique blend of high school and college courses, Scholars Academy has grown into a thriving educational institution.
The Scholars Academy is a program within Horry County Schools aimed at offering advanced educational opportunities to local students. Students enrolled in this program take four years of Advanced Placement (AP) courses while simultaneously attending college classes at Coastal Carolina University. This innovative curriculum prepares them for the rigors of higher education while still in high school.
The academy began under the guidance of its first full-time teacher, Vencie Maxey. Today, Scholars Academy is led by Principal Norman McQueen, who highlights the transformative impact the program has had over the years. The academy started modestly with just 22 ninth graders but has grown to nearly 200 students in recent years, all housed in their dedicated facility on CCU’s campus.
Scholars Academy received its first state report card this year, marking a significant milestone as a standalone institution. Previously, students were ranked alongside peers from their base high schools. The recent ranking as the top high school in South Carolina underscores the academy’s commitment to educational excellence and its rigorous academic standards.
The school has not only produced countless successful graduates but also garnered significant financial aid for its students. The class of 2024, which consists of 34 students, collectively received over $7.7 million in scholarships, with several students earning prestigious accolades such as being named QuestBridge scholars. This financial support opens doors for these students to continue their education at higher levels without incurring debt.
Alumni from Scholars Academy have shared positive reflections on their experiences. Many emphasize how the program prepared them for the demands of college life. Sarah Bell, a class of 2012 alumna, expressed how her time at Scholars instilled confidence, making her transition to the University of South Carolina seamless. Similarly, Caleb Jordan, who graduated in 2019, noted that he graduated debt-free and completed his undergraduate degree more efficiently thanks to the credits he earned at Scholars Academy.
However, the program is not without its challenges. Principal McQueen mentions that the rigor may not be ideal for every student. It demands self-motivation and determination, as it is not merely a means of bolstering academic credentials. Students must genuinely want to thrive in this competitive environment.
Despite the academic focus, the Scholars Academy fosters a supportive community among students and faculty. Former students report valuable relationships built on collaboration and teamwork. Additionally, students participate in athletics and other extracurricular activities at their home high schools, allowing them to maintain friendships and connections while enjoying the benefits of a small academic setting.
As Scholars Academy looks to the future, the positive trends in student achievement and community recognition are promising. Alumni and current students are eager to see where this journey takes them, with a shared consensus that the academy’s best days may still be ahead. The success can be attributed to a collective effort from students, teachers, parents, and the larger community that has embraced this unique educational venture.
The legacy of Scholars Academy promises to continue inspiring future generations of students eager to pursue excellence in academics and beyond.
