This par-71 course spans 7,167 yards and features 25 water hazards, challenging even the best golfers. Get ready for a riveting golf experience as the Cognizant Classic prepares to tee off at the renowned PGA National Resort, nestled in beautiful Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Scheduled from February 27 to March 2, 2025, this tournament marks the beginning of the much-anticipated Florida Swing on the PGA Tour, and excitement is in the air!
Golfers will face a par-71 course stretching a hefty 7,167 yards. It’s a course that demands skill, patience, and strategy with its challenging layout renowned for its treacherous 25 water hazards. These water features will come into play on 15 out of the 18 holes, making precision a top priority for every player.
The fairways at PGA National aren’t overly wide, averaging just 33 yards, which places an added emphasis on accuracy off the tee. And those greens? A generous around 7,000 square feet mean that players will have ample room to work with, but hitting them is easier said than done. In the last tournament held in 2024, players managed to hit only 65% of the fairways and 70% of the greens, showcasing just how tricky this course can be!
Among the favorites for this event is Russell Henley, a talented golfer who won here in 2014 and has seen two top-10 finishes in the last five years at this very course. His recent performance is nothing short of impressive, with seven top-5 finishes over the past year. Another name that stands out is Sungjae Im, the 2020 champion, who is looking eager to reclaim the title. Then there’s Keith Mitchell, who took home the trophy in 2019 and is widely known for his exceptional ball-striking skills.
Keep an eye on the rising stars as well! Players such as Ben Griffin and Lucas Glover are also in contention, looking to leverage their recent good form to make a splash at this tournament.
The PGA National has a reputation for being one of the most challenging venues on the Tour. Just last year, the difficulty level was adjusted, making it the 20th most difficult course compared to prior seasons, which were even tougher. One of the standout features that players dread and respect is the infamous “Bear Trap” – a demanding stretch of holes named for its challenge, which includes holes 15, 16, and 17. Golfers need to be strategic about their shots, often using less than a driver due to the narrow fairways and watery threats lurking in the surroundings.
And if you’re looking for something special, this will also be the tournament debut for the celebrated three-time major champion Jordan Spieth. Plus, amateur golfer Luke Clanton has received a sponsor’s exemption and is striving for full-time status on the PGA Tour – adding another layer of excitement to the competition!
As the Cognizant Classic approaches, the buzz grows. With a mix of seasoned professionals and emerging talents, this is shaping up to be a thrilling tournament. Golf enthusiasts and fans alike will surely be glued to their seats, witnessing who will emerge victorious in this challenging and beautiful golfing oasis. It’s the start of something special, so mark your calendars and get ready for an exhilarating week of golf!
