Carolina Forest, SC – A new charter high school is set to make strides in the Carolina Forest area. The Limestone Charter Association has acquired just under 110 acres off River Oaks Drive for the establishment of the Coastal High School. This school is transitioning from its current site on Palmetto Pointe Boulevard to the new facility at the 2100 block of River Oaks Drive.
The transition comes with a name change, as the school was previously known as Coastal Leadership Academy. Principal Sherri Oskin expressed optimism about the move, stating, “The school is looking forward to its new location and the opportunity for growth that it will allow.” This relocation is expected to provide an enhanced environment for students, despite Coastal High School remaining comparatively small, accommodating a maximum of 520 students from all attendance areas.
Interestingly, the Coastal High School plans to construct its facilities on only a small segment of the acquired land, as most of it is designated as conservation land. Principal Oskin highlighted the unique educational opportunities that the new site presents, indicating that the school intends to integrate outdoor education into all aspects of the curriculum. “Our students will work in collaboration with environmentalists and ecologists to preserve the existing habitats and promote the development of native ecosystems,” Oskin added.
To support its educational vision, Coastal High School has secured a partnership with the North American Land Trust. This collaboration is designed to expand programming and create opportunities that extend beyond traditional classroom settings. The school aims to align its activities with South Carolina’s science curriculum, which will inform seasonal activities that enhance outdoor classroom experiences.
The proposed outdoor classroom opportunities could cover a wide range of subjects, including habitats, wildlife, guest speakers, weather and climate studies, photography, and sculpture. The idea is to create a dynamic learning environment that utilizes the natural setting to foster student engagement and understanding.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new Coastal High School is scheduled for December 7. This important event will set the stage for the construction of new facilities and the start of a transformative educational experience for the future of students in the region. As the community eagerly anticipates the launch of Coastal High, further details and updates about the school’s programs and enrollment opportunities will be shared leading up to the opening.
With a focus on sustainability and a commitment to small class sizes, Coastal High School is poised to offer a distinctive educational pathway that harmonizes academic learning with environmental stewardship.
