Coastal Flood Advisory Warning for Horry and Georgetown Counties Ahead of Friday Morning

Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Horry and Georgetown Counties!

Hey there, residents and visitors of beautiful Coastal North Carolina! If you’re planning to enjoy the shoreline or just going about your daily routines, make sure you’re aware of important updates from the National Weather Service (NWS). An updated coastal flood advisory has been issued that could impact your Friday morning plans!

What’s Happening?

The advisory is valid from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, and it’s all about managing possible flooding in our lovely low-lying areas. Specifically, residents in Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown counties should expect up to a half-foot of inundation above ground level near shorelines and tidal waterways. So, if you live in these areas or plan to be around, it’s vital to stay alert and prepare accordingly.

What to Expect and Where to Check

The NWS clearly states that the areas listed are generally based on average tide conditions. However, if there’s heavy rainfall, high winds, or other unpredictable factors, some additional spots may also find themselves under water. If you’re heading towards the beaches, remember that some vulnerable causeways might experience minor coastal flooding. Keep an eye on low-lying roads along the Intracoastal Waterway and those nearby tidal creeks, as they might be prone to similar issues.

Your Safety is Key!

If you need to travel during this time, allow extra time for delays as some roads may very well be closed. And for goodness’ sake, do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Protect yourself and your property, especially if you’re in flood-prone zones.

Evacuate When Necessary!

For those in low-lying areas or campers, please consider taking immediate action if you’re at risk of flooding. Seek higher ground as soon as you can and follow all evacuation instructions without delay. If time permits, securely lock your home and disconnect any utilities you can. But whatever you do, avoid entering basements or rooms where the outlets might be underwater. Safety first!

Watch Out for Hidden Dangers!

Picture this: You see some sparks or hear buzzing sounds. That’s your cue to evacuate immediately. Floodwaters can contain hidden electrical dangers, so steer clear! Even if the water looks shallow, keep in mind that just six inches of moving water can knock you off your feet. If by any chance you find yourself trapped, get to the highest spot you can and call emergency services. Your safety is the priority!

Hydroplaning? No Thanks!

And don’t think you’re immune when behind the wheel. Hydroplaning can happen easily during wet conditions. When a vehicle loses contact and starts sliding uncontrollably on wet roads, it can lead to some scary moments. Did you know that most cars can be swept away by just 12 inches of rushing water? Yikes! So even if you think the water looks manageable, it’s best to steer clear of flooded roads altogether!

In summary, stay tuned to updates from local officials and take the necessary precautions seriously. Enjoy your time in our coastal paradise, but always prioritize your safety! Keeping you safe is the most important job there is! 💧🌊
