A New Era for Coastal Carolina: Building an 8,000-Seat Convocation Center
CONWAY — Coastal Carolina University (CCU) has announced plans for a new, state-of-the-art convocation center, an initiative led by newly appointed Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and University Recreation, Chance Miller. This news was revealed at Miller’s introductory news conference, where CCU President Michael Benson described the initiative as “a generational project”.
Expanding Horizons with the New Convocation Center
The groundbreaking for the 8,000-seat venue is scheduled for 2026 and will take place at the critical intersection of 501 and University Boulevard. The facility is designed to host a variety of large-scale university and community events, including university basketball and volleyball matches as well as high school tournaments and graduations, enhancing campus life and community engagement without seating constraints.
Multi-Faceted Funding
The construction of this extensive project will be financed by a dedicated 1 percent sales tax, a funding measure aimed at supporting the building needs of public schools and higher education institutions across Horry County, providing a sustainable financial model for ongoing educational and community development.
Chance Miller at the Helm of Transformation
Chance Miller brings extensive experience in facility planning and capital fundraising, notably leading a $35 million campaign at his former role at the University of South Carolina. His background makes him well-suited to direct CCU’s significant new developments.
Comprehensive Development Strategy
In addition to the convocation center, CCU’s expansion plans include an indoor practice facility for football, a new soccer complex, and upgraded track and field facilities. Efforts are also underway to enhance the fan experience at existing sports venues like Brooks Stadium and the Springs Brooks Stadium for baseball.
Enhancing Fan Engagement
Miller is committed to improving fan engagement by utilizing approaches seen in organizations like Disney to deliver a superior game-day experience. His goal is to ensure that from arrival to departure, attendees have a memorable and seamless experience at CCU events.
The development projects spearheaded by Chance Miller promise to significantly enhance student life, community cohesion, and athletic facilities at Coastal, marking a substantial step forward for the university.
