Myrtle Beach, SC – The Myrtle Beach City Council has approved a major initiative with Coastal Carolina University (CCU), sanctioning the construction of a new multipurpose theater in the city’s Arts and Innovation District.
The theater’s approval followed the city’s agreement on lease and operational strategies, discussions of which started in February and were further endorsed by CCU’s Board of Trustees. The theater will be located between Winna’s Kitchen and Sun City Café, and is expected to host an array of cultural performances, academic events, civic meetings, and other community gatherings.
The area earmarked for the theater faces challenges with high rates of homelessness and crime. In response, the City of Myrtle Beach has committed $30 million towards purchasing land for new developments, including the proposed theater. This effort is part of a broader city initiative aimed at revitalizing downtown Myrtle Beach and enhancing its appeal through the cultural influence of CCU.
This partnership signifies a major development in city and academic collaboration, encouraged by leaders such as Myrtle Beach Area Chamber C.E.O. Karen Riordan and CCU President Michael T. Benson. Additionally, Mayor Brenda Bethule, whose family has long-standing ties with CCU, is expected to play a key role in the project, facilitating deep connections that benefit this initiative.
Coastal Carolina University will oversee the theater’s operations and scheduling, while the city will be responsible for maintaining the building’s structure and exterior. The initial lease includes a provision for a five-year extension, reflecting the city’s long-term commitment to the project’s success.
The new theater is anticipated to serve as a central cultural hub for Myrtle Beach, attracting both residents and tourists. This is expected to boost local businesses and enhance the quality of life within the community. While the project’s start date remains to be announced, the involved parties are keen on advancing this significant downtown development.
