CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina University’s Charles Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies will host the International Gullah Geechee and African Diaspora (IGGAD) 2024 Conference. The conference focuses on oral Gullah Geechee language traditions. Additionally, there will be art, fashion, and performances to celebrate the culture. The conference begins on Thursday, Feb. 22 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 24. It kicks off in Atlantic Beach with workshops, tours, and film screenings at the Atlantic Beach Community Center.
Veronica Gerald, the Joyner Institute founding director and CCU Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English, will give the keynote speech at 5 p.m. at the Johnson Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. Events will also be held in Downtown Conway.
The conference aims to shed light on the rich oral traditions of the Gullah Geechee culture, which has historical roots in the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia. These traditions encompass a unique blend of African, Caribbean, and Southern influences, creating a distinct and vibrant cultural heritage.
In addition to the academic discussions and presentations, the conference will feature a showcase of art, fashion, and performances that highlight the creativity and talent within the Gullah Geechee community. Attendees can expect to experience a colorful and dynamic display of traditional and contemporary expressions of Gullah Geechee culture.
Workshops, tours, and film screenings will provide opportunities for attendees to engage with the local Gullah Geechee community and learn more about their history and heritage. These interactive activities aim to promote understanding and appreciation for the unique cultural contributions of the Gullah Geechee people.
