Carly Cummins, a dedicated golfer, recently took some time to reflect on her journey and aspirations as she tackles the 2024 golfing season. During a training session with the Dorset County squad, she set herself a total of seven goals that she believes will guide her through the year.
Leading the charge in her goal-setting endeavors is her lifelong dream of achieving a scratch handicap. When Carly first picked up her clubs, this ambition became a constant companion. In her late twenties, she nearly reached this prestigious milestone with a handicap index of 0.6 while playing for Surrey’s county first team. However, as of now, she finds herself hovering around a handicap index of 3.6 at the end of 2024, only a slight bump up from the 3.4 she started the year with.
This slow progression isn’t due to a lack of effort. Unfortunately, the weather this winter has been anything but cooperative. Continuous rain has plagued the courses, causing them to close and limiting her playtime immensely. Carly is quick to point out that external challenges, like unpredictable weather and the balancing act of parental responsibilities alongside work commitments, have all played a part in hindering her golfing journey.
While it’s easy to get frustrated over a number stuck near the same mark, Carly won’t let that overshadow the positive aspects of 2024. The year has been a whirlwind of change, from launching a new business and moving homes to navigating the ups and downs of personal life events, including a divorce. These experiences, though demanding, have added depth and resilience to her character.
Among the highlights of the year was her selection to represent the Dorset County Ladies team. This recognition was significant for Carly, an affirmation that her hard work and dedication were paying off. The team enjoyed a victorious run at the south-west matchweek held at Perranporth Golf Club and went on to compete at the England Golf National finals at Stover Golf Club. For Carly, this experience has not only boosted her confidence but also showcased the competitive edge necessary to make strides in women’s golf.
As she gears up for the 2025 season, Carly is keen on improving her fitness. She is focusing on becoming stronger and more flexible, which will enhance her overall performance on the course. Although the current handicap of 3.7 might seem like a hurdle, Carly is far from disheartened. In fact, she is determined to utilize lessons learned to improve her game in the following year. With an established background that boasts wins, including the South West of England Ladies Intermediate Championship, and holding the ladies course record at Parkstone with an impressive score of 68, she remains hopeful for better weather conditions and a rejuvenating season ahead.
