Brookgreen Gardens Announces June Lineup Featuring Annual Summer Light Exhibition

Brookgreen Gardens, a National Historic Landmark, is set to host its annual Summer Light: Art by Night exhibition, alongside a myriad of other activities through June. The tranquil garden location, renowned for its historic landscapes and impressive sculptures, will transform into a magical night scene through a series of dazzling light installations, impressively designed by the same team behind the fan-favorite Nights of a Thousand Candles exhibition.

Summer Light: Art by Night

With 23 scheduled nights between June 5 and August 24, thousands of bulbs will brighten up the location, providing a unique after-hours experience for garden-goers. The enchanting Summer Light: Art by Night exhibition also features live music and a variety of dining and beverage options, courtesy of Austin’s Harvest Restaurant, the Old Kitchen, and an array of food trucks.

Additional Programming in June

June ushers in an extensive lineup of both entertainment and educational programs for visitors of all ages. A special celebration marking Juneteenth will take place, as well as the unveiling of a new art exhibition. Programs covering as disparate subjects as photography, tree identification, and sand tiger sharks also fill the event calendar.

Jubilees of Juneteenth

An important part of June’s events, the Juneteenth Freedom Day on June 15, pays homage to the final abolition of slavery in Texas in 1865. Brookgreen Gardens also honors individuals dedicated to improving race relations in South Carolina and the counties of Georgetown and Horry. The day promises artistic performances, informative talks, and enriching activities that highlight the significance of the holiday.

Art and Education Flourish

The Gardens will offer artist talks, walks, and instructional programs. The Open Studio offers the public an insight into the extensive and often meticulous process of creating sculpture. With topics that cover Brookgreen’s vast collections, rich history, and creative processes, there’s something for everyone. Keeping in theme with the location, an informative session – “Get to Know Trees” – gives attendees the chance to get up close and personal with the variety of trees that populate the Garden’s woodland trails.

Exhibitions: Spotlighting American History

Brookgreen Gardens will also host a number of exhibitions throughout June. The National Sculpture Society’s 91st Annual Awards Exhibition rewardingly introduces viewers to the best in American sculptural talent. Celebrating the work of both established masters and rising stars, the People’s Choice Award will be declared at the end of the exhibit. Another noteworthy exhibition is Arun Drummond’s Societal Contrasts: Past and Present, which explores the contrasting experiences of Black Americans in history.
