UNF’s Brett Schell Steals the Spotlight with a Hole-in-One!

It’s safe to say that the golf enthusiasts among us have had an exciting week, thanks to Brett Schell, a senior at the University of North Florida, who truly stole the show during the General James Hackler Championship. On March 17, Schell dazzled fans with not one, but a remarkable hole-in-one and an impressive three eagles throughout the tournament held at the beautiful Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

A Dramatic Day on the Course

With a 9-iron in hand, Schell confidently sunk a hole-in-one from a stunning 183 yards at the ninth hole. That’s what we call life-changing! But don’t think he stopped at just that ace. Schell also demonstrated remarkable prowess, recording three eagles over the course of the tournament, a feat that was only matched by one other player!

By the end of the championship, Schell tied for ninth place, finishing with an impressive score of 5-under-par 211. While he finished seven shots behind the tournament’s winner, Brendan Valdes from Auburn, Schell can still hold his head high, as he posted under-par rounds every day of the tournament. Talk about consistency!

Schell’s All-Star Performance

Schell’s performance at this championship secured him the title of having the fourth-best 54-hole score of the season for the Ospreys. This tournament also marked his sixth top-10 finish throughout his college career, and his third-round score of 69 adds another entry to his impressive record, now at 16 scores in the 60s across both Ole Miss and UNF.

Even though the UNF Ospreys, unfortunately, fell to 13th place as a team, Schell’s achievements have certainly given fans something to cheer about as they gear up for their final regular-season tournament coming up on April 14-15, hosted by the University of Virginia at the Birdwood Golf Club in Charlottesville, Virginia. Following that, they will prepare for the ASUN Championship set to unfold from April 22-24 at the picturesque Kinderlou Forest Golf Club in Valdosta.

Flagler Women Shine as Well

Meanwhile, not far from UNF, the Flagler College women’s golf team is making headlines of their own. Currently ranked second in the Scoreboard national rankings, Flagler is closely chasing Anderson College (S.C.). Just last week, the team won the Emerald Coast Collegiate, marking their ninth victory in the last 18 events since the fall season. With star players, including the likes of Stella Jelinek and Henriette Stranda making waves, they are certainly a team to keep an eye on.

Fun Golf Events Ahead!

In addition to these outstanding collegiate performances, keep your calendars marked for the upcoming Menendez High School Golf Fundraiser taking place on April 5 at St. Augustine Shores. With a scramble format and registration open from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m., there’s still time to sign up and enjoy a day of friendly competition followed by lunch and award presentations!

As the golfing season heats up, it’s exciting to see local talent stepping onto the greens and making their marks. From Schell’s incredible hole-in-one to Flagler’s rising stars, the spirit of the game continues to thrive in our communities. So whether you’re an avid fan or a weekend player, there’s plenty to watch for and get involved in as the golf season rolls into full swing. Happy golfing!
