Reflections on a High-Potential Weekend

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina – Labor Day Weekend, the last prominent tourist period of the summer, has passed. Businesses lined along the Myrtle Beach boardwalk are now looking back on their performance, comparing expectations to reality. The summer had seen less foot traffic, lowering hopes for huge sales during the Labor Day weekend. However, retrospective analysis reveals that many did much better than anticipated.

Varied Reactions from Businesses

Salvador Jacinto, proprietor of E-Z Eats Cafe, noted that while his sales weren’t as high as the previous year, the holiday attracted a significant number of visitors, providing a pleasant change in pace. “It did go pretty well, but not as much as last year. It was a significant change in pace to what it’s been,” stated Jacinto.

Meanwhile, Julia Morovitz credited the Waves of Praise Festival at the Burroughs and Chapin Pavilion for the substantial boost in clientele. “The gospel festival has really helped a lot,” shared Morovitz. For restaurant owners like Jacinto, the event marked a speedy influx of patrons. Labor Day weekend started strong for his business as foot traffic became non-stop from Friday.

Room for Improvement

Despite the surge in customers for many businesses along the boardwalk, some believe their performance fell short. This feeling particularly resonated with Wacky T’s Manager, David Angarita. “It was better than previous weekends, but still low for us,” he revealed. Indeed, the occupancy statistics for short-term rental lodgings and hotels still indicated a 3.4% decline from the previous year.

The Verdict

The Labor Day weekend showed signs of improvement for some businesses at Myrtle Beach’s boardwalk, especially in comparison to the slowdown earlier in the summer. Events like the Waves of Praise Festival helped draw in crowds, but as the hotel occupancy statistics suggest, businesses still face challenges ahead outside of holiday weekends. However, owners remain determined, using this weekend’s outcome to strategize for the upcoming seasons.
