HORRY COUNTY, S.C. — As Horry County is set to embrace a large-scale retailer, the Lowcountry community will also be able to welcome a much-needed dose of generosity. The national bulk shopping club, BJ’s Wholesale, is launching a new store this fall in Carolina Forest, simultaneously announcing a partnership with the local food bank.
The eagerly anticipated store opening will not only bring great deals and discounts for local shoppers but also contribute significantly to boosting the local economy. BJ’s Wholesale is projected to create over 100 jobs in the Horry County by the end of the year.
However, the retailer’s commitment to the local community goes much further. In an inspiring initiative, BJ’s Wholesale also detailed the store’s plan to donate unsold produce, meat, and other goods to the Lowcountry Food Bank every week. By doing so, BJ’s Wholesale directly addresses the prevalent issue of food insecurity among thousands, especially children, in the surrounding communities.
Lowcountry Food Bank representative, Mark McGilvery, expressed his organization’s immense gratitude and excitement about partnering with BJ’s Wholesale. “We’re going to be able to utilize all of the product that we rescue from the store to support our neighbors in need incredibly locally. 15 minutes this way, 20 minutes that way, five minutes down the road. It’s gonna change the trajectory of people’s lives right here in the local community,” said McGilvery.
From the corporate perspective, this generous partnership falls directly in line with BJ’s Wholesale Club mission. Gina Fedele, a representative of BJ’s Wholesale Club, shared the company’s vision and purpose, “Our purpose at BJ’s Wholesale Club is to serve the families that depend on us, so it really helps us serve our purpose in the community.”
The opening of BJ’s Wholesale Club membership center, scheduled for September 13 at the Tanger Outlets on Highway 501, will provide information about membership and employment opportunities.
The exciting news about the opening of BJ’s Wholesale club and its commendable philanthropic efforts is a beacon of hope and anticipation within the community. The store’s commitment to making a real difference in the lives of those living in Horry County is truly a step forward in fighting food insecurity, unemployment, and boosting the local economy.
