Big Changes Ahead as Create Conway Closes and New Organization Takes the Lead

Big Changes for Conway’s Arts Scene

If you’ve been keeping your ear to the ground in Conway, South Carolina, you may have heard the bittersweet news that Create Conway, Inc. is closing its doors after an impressive 15 years of fostering a creative atmosphere in our beloved community. Founded with the mission of enhancing the local arts scene and encouraging community participation, this organization has added some vibrant colors to the tapestry of Horry County.

A Fond Farewell to a Creative Force

As they prepare to close, Create Conway leaves behind a rich legacy, and it’s certainly one worth celebrating! Do you remember the Conway Artwalks? Those lively evenings packed with art displays, local musicians, and a whole lot of community spirit? Or the Live Oak Art & Music Festival that drew people from all corners to enjoy vibrant performances and fantastic artwork? And let’s not forget those delightful little treasures called Little Free Libraries scattered around town, sparking joy and a love for reading in our neighborhoods.

Create Conway has truly kept the creative flame alive with other successful initiatives such as the Horry County Ag & Art Tour, the Muse on the Waccamaw Songwriting Contest, and the fun-filled “Dancing With Wool” project. It’s safe to say they’ve made their mark and have brought countless smiles and inspiration to our community!

The Torch Passes

As one chapter closes, another begins. Create Conway is not just bidding adieu but is also passing the torch to a new organization: the Conway Architecture Salvage and Heritage Project. This non-profit organization is on a mission to preserve Conway’s architectural heritage and cultural identity. It sounds like a perfect match, don’t you think?

In a generous move, Create Conway is contributing $7,500 to support the new organization’s programs, ensuring that the spirit of creativity and community engagement lives on. Barbara Streeter, the president of Create Conway, expressed their excitement for this new chapter. “We are thrilled to embrace this new chapter and support the vital work of Conway Architecture Salvage and Heritage Project,” she said. The enthusiasm is contagious!

Making a Difference in the Community

Just over a year into its journey, the Conway Architecture Salvage and Heritage Project has already made some impressive strides. They’ve managed to keep more than 500 tons of historic building materials out of landfills! Yep, you read that right—500 tons! This initiative not only promotes sustainability but also celebrates the rich history of our area by putting these materials back into use.

This organization isn’t just about saving materials; it’s also revitalizing some historical gems in our town. The Icehouse and McIver-Shaw Lumber Co. buildings will soon be transformed into their headquarters, featuring multi-use spaces that will be dedicated to reviving traditional crafts and skills. How cool is that?

Looking Ahead

While the closure of Create Conway marks the end of an extraordinary initiative, it’s also a fresh start for both the new organization and our community. The arts are an essential part of what makes Conway—well, Conway! With support, teamwork, and shared passion, the future looks bright.

Let’s keep the spirit alive, folks! Whether through art, heritage, or craft, there’s one thing that remains true: creativity will continue to flow through our community.
