Have you ever had an idea that just snowballs out of control? That’s exactly what happened to Tom Bailey, the mastermind behind Avoda Golf. What started as an effort to craft a personal set of golf clubs spiraled into one of the most incredible equipment stories of 2024. It’s the kind of tale that makes you believe in the power of passion and persistence!
Bailey’s journey began about a year ago when he decided to design his own set of golf clubs. And let’s be real—what he ended up creating exceeded all of his wildest dreams. After leaving college in the U.S. in 2017 to focus on his golfing career, Bailey faced the frustrations of ongoing back injuries. But instead of giving up, he converted his struggles into a pure fascination for understanding the technical side of golf. He explored everything from swing mechanics to body movement. “I dove down a lot of rabbit holes,” he recalls. This quest for solutions led him to inadvertently step into the world of coaching, helping countless players who shared similar issues.
During his coaching journey, Bailey became intrigued by the unique golf swing of professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau. After following his techniques and gear choices closely, he had a revelation: his swing style resembled DeChambeau’s. “What is he doing with his equipment? It’s obviously working,” Bailey mused. This was when the concept of single-length golf clubs entered his brain, and by 2021, he was neck-deep in research.
His quest for knowledge led him to connect with Mike Schy, DeChambeau’s long-time coach, for a deep dive into the equipment game. Using whatever he could muster, Bailey started building clubs in his UK base while waiting for COVID restrictions to ease. Finally, at the beginning of 2022, he flew out to California for what was supposed to be a one-month stay at Schy’s Academy. Fast forward two and a half years, and Bailey found his home in the world of golf club designing.
At Schy’s Academy, alongside the same tools that birthed DeChambeau’s first-ever one-length set, Bailey began crafting his own hybrid clubs. The concept of Avoda’s combo-length irons was born. These unique irons maintain a single length for many clubs and adjust their lengths according to the player’s swing speed and style. “Someone might benefit from a single length up to a 9-iron but need a little help beyond that,” Bailey explained. It was innovative, practical, and just what golfers needed!
As Bailey’s experimental clubs began to capture the attention of fellow golf enthusiasts, requests for his creations flooded in. This led him to team up with his brother, Nicholas, who had experience in the firearms industry, on an ambitious project to make Bailey’s vision a reality. However, they faced numerous challenges, with many manufacturers rejecting their ideas, deeming them “not for the mass consumer.” But where others saw limitations, Bailey saw opportunity.
In a twist of fate, Bailey crossed paths with Bryson DeChambeau. As DeChambeau was looking for new irons after hitting remarkable scores, he learned about Bailey’s custom creations. The two of them came together to revolutionize the golf club industry. Together with Schy, they set out to build an iron set featuring a unique bulge on the face to help with precision and forgiveness.
In a stunning stroke of luck (or perhaps destiny), DeChambeau tested these new clubs just before a major championship. When he used them at the Masters, the results were phenomenal. With all eyes on him after a first-round 65, the buzz surrounding Avoda Golf was impossible to ignore.
The question lingers: will these innovative clubs ever hit the shelves? Bailey remains adamant that he wants to ensure the fitting is right for each individual before making them available to the broader public. “I’m not just going to slap this on a golf club and call it a day,” he assures aspiring players. He envisions establishing fitting locations and gearing up to meet the growing demand for quality equipment that plays to each golfer’s strengths.
So, as the tale of Avoda Golf continues to unfold, one thing is for sure—this journey is just beginning and there’s no telling how far this will go. With innovation rooted in passion, the future of golf clubs looks truly exciting!
