“Aug-tober”: An Unexpected Chill Brings Record Low Temperatures
Residents of Myrtle Beach, SC, are experiencing unusually cool and refreshing weather, with a forecast of potential record-breaking low temperatures tonight, in what locals have playfully dubbed “Aug-tober”.
High Pressure System Responsible for Low Temperatures
A sprawling area of high pressure over much of the eastern half of the United States is currently generating remarkably pleasant weather conditions. This atmospheric system is responsible for the plunge in temperature, with the coming nights expected to evoke early autumnal weather.
Record Low Temperatures in Sight
With clear skies, low humidity, and light winds, forecasters predict the mercury will fall to levels not experienced since June. While inland temperatures are expected to dip into the upper 50s, nearing a possible record low, coastal areas along the Grand Strand will experience milder temperatures in the mid 60s.
Pleasant Weather Conditions to Persist
Despite the chilly nights, the days will be fairly warm and agreeable. Morning temperatures in the 60s will rise to about the upper 70s near the beaches and the low 80s inland under mostly sunny skies. However, clouds are expected to build up towards the weekend.
Forecast Towards Weekend
As the weekend approaches, subtle changes in the weather will occur. Humidity levels and upper-level moisture are expected to rise, clouding over the previously clear skies. The sharp increase in moisture could result in scattered light showers by Friday afternoon and evening.
Gradual Change Over the Weekend
The humidity levels will continue to hike over the weekend, accompanied by mostly cloudy skies. Occasional light showers or a stray thunderstorm are anticipated throughout this period. Afternoon temperatures will also steadily rise. By Saturday, it is expected to reach the lower to middle 80s, with further warming on Sunday as temperatures could reach the mid to upper 80s.
This surprising pattern of weather, though uncommon for the month of August, is an exciting example of the dynamism of nature. The residents are advised to enjoy these fleeting moments of pleasant weather before normal summer temperatures return.
