Visitors Revel in the Beauty of Atalaya Castle at Huntington Beach State Park in SC

In the heart of South Carolina’s Huntington Beach State Park, beyond the alligators, picturesque beaches, and abundant seabirds, a lavish construction stands tall, offering an isolated retreat within the confines of the woodland. Known by locals and visitors alike as Atalaya Castle, this stunning structure, with its labyrinthine corridors and verdant courtyards, remains a major visitor attraction.

A Historical Monument Nestled in the Dunes

Atalaya Castle is accessible to everyone wishing to delve into its historical aura, for a nominal fee of $2. This architectural masterpiece was the brainchild of Archer Huntington and his wife, Anna Hyatt Huntington, constructed in the early 30s as a winter home.

The edifice stands as a symbol of the pair’s artistic taste, built in the style of Moorish fortifications along Spain’s coast. Prior to the Huntingtons’ arrival, the land nestled amidst four ageing rice plantations served as a hunt club.

The Huntigtons christened their haven “Atalaya” – a Spanish term meaning “watchtower”. The castle is an architectural marvel with two lush courtyards surrounded by 30 rooms and a prominent 40-foot central watchtower.

Atalaya Castle Today

The prominent structure ceased to pulse with the same vibrant life after the demise of Archer Huntington in 1955. His wife, Anna, never returned to their winter getaway post-Archer’s death. However, the enchantment of the castle has been preserved, thanks to a lease agreement with the South Carolina Forestry Commission in 1960. The property has since become a part of Huntington Beach State Park.

Presently, the castle stands a befitting tribute to the Huntingtons’ memory, acting as a bustling venue for several events throughout the year. Between spring and fall, the courtyard acts as a picturesque backdrop for wedding ceremonies. Every September, the area floods with artisans showcasing their work during the annual arts and crafts festival.

Visitors Captivated by the Majestic Castle

Among the many visitors, Tammy May of Huntington, West Virginia, discovered Atalaya Castle while exploring the recreational area. May was camping at the park when she stumbled across this historical gem. “I think it’s amazing, and I can’t believe the history here”, she said, echoing the sentiments of many others who admire this architectural marvel.

Indeed, Atalaya Castle continues to pull heartstrings of those who visit, serving as a peaceful retreat, a testament to an artistic pursuit, or simply an escape along the coast of South Carolina. As the state park employees diligently prepare the castle for the next event or tourist arrival, the charm of Atalaya remains untouched, insulating South Carolina’s unique coastal heritage.
