Heartwarming Moments in Surfside Beach as 98-Year-Old Arlene Burch is Honored

Surfside Beach was buzzing with excitement this past February 13, as 98-year-old Arlene Burch was celebrated as a true Living Legend by the Military Women’s Memorial. This heartfelt ceremony recognized the military service of incredible women, like Arlene, who have bravely served since the times of the American Revolution.

A Life of Service

Arlene, a proud U.S. Navy veteran, saw action during the Korean War. She entered Navy Boot Camp in Great Lakes, Illinois, in 1950, setting her on a path that would become a memorable chapter of her life. Burch trained fervently as a Teleman Petty Officer Third Class in Norfolk, Virginia, gaining essential knowledge in meteorology, cryptology, teletype equipment, and Morse Code. She later found herself stationed at Main Navy in the heart of Washington, D.C., where she witnessed the highs and lows of military communication.

A Joyous Recognition

The day was not just another ordinary outing for Arlene; it was a wonderful celebration filled with warmth and well-deserved honors. As she accepted a flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol Building, guests witnessed a rare moment—tears of joy welled up in her eyes, a testament to her proud service to the nation she loves. Donning a cap that proudly declared her status as a Korean War veteran, Burch beamed with pride throughout the ceremony.

Community Connections

The ceremony featured notable dignitaries, including Surfside Beach Mayor Robert Krouse and Horry County Councilman Tyler Servant. The atmosphere was electric with enthusiasm, and speeches filled with admiration flowed as Kaitlyn Illsley, representing U.S. Senator Tim Scott, presented a congratulatory letter. South Carolina State Representative Val Guest even sent a framed resolution in honor of Arlene. Additionally, a letter from Governor Henry McMaster further emphasized the importance of this special day. The Horry County Council was also on hand to present a proclamation, solidifying Arlene’s legacy within the community.

Bingo and Beyond

Despite her remarkable achievements, Arlene remains down-to-earth and relatable. She is an avid Bingo player who heads out three times a week to enjoy the game, bringing her energy and spirit along with her. Surprisingly, this incredible woman does not rely on any prescriptions and insists she feels “a day over 50” as she approaches her 99th birthday this August.

Reflections on the Past

Looking back, Arlene remembers her Navy days fondly, cherishing them as “the best years of my life”. Her decision to join the Navy wasn’t met with enthusiasm from her family, particularly her father, but she remained resolute in her desire to serve. After her service, Arlene transitioned into family life upon marrying her husband, Roy, although she now stands as a widow of 32 years.

Displaying Her Pride

Now a living legacy in her own right, Arlene plans to display her honors proudly in her den, reminding visitors of the incredible life she led. The ceremony did not shy away from incorporating the community’s cultural touch, with a brief pause for Bingo games taking place at the nearby Reed Recreation Center at Market Common.

Arlene’s journey exemplifies the spirit of resilience and dedication, shining a beacon of inspiration for all. As Surfside Beach continues to honor its veterans, there’s no denying that Arlene Burch is indeed a living legend.
