Myrtle Beach Welcomes Innovative Food Access System

Big news for our beloved Myrtle Beach! An exciting new initiative aimed at tackling food insecurity is rolling out in the Grand Strand area, thanks to a generous grant from food service giant US Foods. This project is in partnership with Feeding America and is set to enhance the existing food relief efforts provided by our local food banks, especially the Lowcountry Food Bank.

Direct to Neighbor Lockers: What’s Happening?

Imagine a world where you can customize your grocery order online, just like ordering your favorite takeout. Sounds convenient, right? That’s exactly what the new Direct to Neighbor locker project is about! Instead of the usual wait times and long lines at traditional food banks, you’ll be able to place your food order from the comfort of your home. Super cool!

After you’ve made your order online, the participating food bank (in this case, the Lowcountry Food Bank) will prepare your items. You then simply head over to designated lockers—these can be frozen, refrigerated, or non-temperature controlled—to pick up your goodies. It’s a brand-new way to access food assistance, making things much easier and, most importantly, dignified for those facing food hardships.

Local Lockers on the Way

In the Myrtle Beach area, the lockers will be located at North Strand Helping Hand in Longs. Local residents can look forward to these lockers being available by December, just in time for the holiday season when community support is so crucial.

Jenece Upton, who is the senior manager of community affairs at US Foods, shared a bit about how revolutionary this system is: “The Direct to Neighbor locker project is really one of the most innovative food access projects in the country right now.” She emphasizes that it offers a “convenient and dignified” way for people who need help to access food, eliminating some of the challenges associated with traditional food banks. No more struggling with transportation or mobility issues—this new model brings food support directly to your fingertips.

Generosity and Growth

This isn’t US Foods’ first rodeo when it comes to helping out those in need! Since 2007, they’ve contributed over $170 million in food and supplies to Feeding America’s network of food banks. But this project is special; it includes their largest single donation to date, a whopping $750,000 grant dedicated to making this locker project a reality.

It’s heartening to see such generosity stepping up to tackle food insecurity, making our community stronger and more united. For many, this project won’t just help fill cupboards but can create a sense of hope and empowerment as people regain a touch of control over their food choices.

A Community Project

As we head into the holiday season, this new initiative reminds us all of the importance of community. With many families facing tough times, the Direct to Neighbor locker project stands as a beacon of support and kindness. It’s not just about food; it’s about respect and empowerment at a time when those values mean the most.

If you, or someone you know, is in need of these services or has questions about how they’ll work, be sure to stay tuned for more updates as December approaches. Together, we can make a difference right here at home, ensuring that no one in our Myrtle Beach community goes hungry.
