Coast Guard, SCDNR Issue Emergency ‘No Wake Zone’ Along Intracoastal Waterway for Boater Safety

Emergency ‘No Wake Zone’ Implemented

The U.S. Coast Guard along with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) have issued an emergency ‘No Wake Zone’ along the Intracoastal Waterway. This action comes in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Debby which has resulted in rapidly changing water conditions and increased hazards for boaters.

This temporary precautionary measure has been put into effect for all waters of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, stretching from the Fantasy Harbour Bridge to Bucksport Marina, and including both Rosewood and Lawsons landings.

Duration of the ‘No Wake Zone’

The No Wake Zone is set to remain in effect until August 23, or until such a time when high waters recede and local conditions allow for safe navigation. This time frame could see adjustments according to prevailing conditions and subsequent official assessments.

Potential Hazards to Boaters

The bulletin issued by the Coast Guard explained, “Due to local flooding impacts, state and federal authorities have determined that wakes from vessels transiting the area may create hazardous conditions.” These conditions could lead to potential dangers for boaters, making this public warning of utmost importance.

Law Enforcement Patrol increased

Horry County officials have advised that law enforcement and the SCDNR will be increasing patrols along the waterway during the ‘No Wake Zone’ period. This decision underscores the seriousness with which officials are taking this situation and the need for public safety on the water.

A Temporary Adjustment for Boating Activities

The emergency ‘No Wake Zone’ is a significant temporary adjustment to usual boating activities along the Intercoastal Waterway. While it may disrupt regular recreation and sightseeing activities, it is essential for ensuring the safety of all boaters. Authorities request the cooperation and understanding of all boaters during this period.

Stay Alert and Updated

Boaters and other interested parties are advised to stay updated about the situation by tuning into the latest official updates and heeding to advisory statements. Compliance with the ‘No Wake Zone’ will not only ensure individual safety but also contribute to public safety at large.
