Expansion at Coastal Carolina University: New Convocation and Arts Center Complex

Ambitious Development in Myrtle Beach

Coastal Carolina University in Conway has announced plans for a substantial campus expansion, featuring an 8,000-seat convocation center and a modern arts center with a large concert hall. Announced on June 20, this development is set to transform the university’s offerings in both culture and athletics.

Facility Details

Located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 501 and University Boulevard, the planned facilities promise significant visibility and accessibility. The convocation center is designed to host large-scale events such as graduations and basketball games, with construction scheduled to start in 2026. Adjacent to this, the Center for the Arts will house a concert hall with seating for 1,800 to 2,000, accommodating both local and major performances.

Funding the Development

The expansion is funded by a 1 percent sales tax extension approved by Horry County voters in 2022, a continuation of a measure initially implemented in 2008. This tax supports educational infrastructure projects across the county, potentially bringing nearly $2 billion over 15 years, a portion of which will support the university’s new facilities.

Community and Educational Impact

The new convocation center and arts center are expected to significantly impact both Coastal Carolina University and the Horry County community. The convocation center will serve as a venue for the university’s volleyball and basketball games and host a variety of events such as concerts and state championships. The Center for the Arts will enhance the cultural landscape by providing a state-of-the-art venue for arts and performances.

Additional Infrastructure Developments

In addition to the arts and convocation centers, the university is also investing in other facilities such to enrich student life and athletic programs, including a new track and field complex and an expanded Lib Jackson Student Center.

Future Prospects

Completion of the Center for the Arts is dependent on the continued success of tax revenue, with far-reaching benefits for the community and educational sectors anticipated. The development represents a crucial step in positioning Coastal Carolina University as a central community and educational hub in the region.
