Coastal Carolina University Announces Plans for New Convocation Center

New Athletics Director Spearheads Ambitious Initiative

CONWAY — In a move that heralds a new era for Coastal Carolina University, newly appointed Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics and University Recreation, Chance Miller, in collaboration with CCU President Michael Benson, announced plans for a new state-of-the-art convocation center expected to break ground in 2026.

The Vision for the Future

Addressing a packed venue during his introductory news conference on June 18, Miller discussed the strategic vision for the 8,000-seat facility designed to host the university’s basketball and volleyball teams. The structure is poised as a venue for not only sporting events but also local high school tournaments and graduation ceremonies, increasing its utility and significance within the community.

Funding and Development Plans

Slated for construction at the corner of 500 and University Boulevard, the funding for this massive project will derive from a 1 percent sales tax, already approved to support Horry County’s educational infrastructure needs. While the total cost of the center has yet to be announced, the funding strategy highlights a partnership between the university and the broader community, aiming at comprehensive regional development.

Broader Impact and Community Growth

Apart from the convocation center, Coastal Carolina University’s athletic department is planning several other infrastructure projects, including an indoor practice facility, a new soccer complex, and upgrades to the existing Brooks Stadium. Miller emphasized the transformative impact these facilities will have on the university’s ability to attract top talent and enhance student-athlete experiences. “It’s about creating opportunities not only for our athletes but for the community as a whole,” Miller said.

Enhancing Fan Experience

Miller also highlighted his vision for elevating the fan experience at CCU sporting events, drawing inspiration from his personal experiences and best practices from industry leaders like Disney. “From the moment fans arrive to when they leave, our goal is to make their experience memorable and seamless,” Miller articulated, stressing the importance of community engagement and operational excellence.

Looking Ahead

As Coastal Carolina University braces for these exciting developments, the broader Myrtle Beach community anticipates the ripple effects of growth, tourism, and enhanced sports programs. With these projects, Miller and President Benson are setting a strategic path that intertwines athletic excellence with community development, promising a vibrant future for both the university and the region.
