Myrtle Beach moves closer to bringing CCU theatre to downtown area

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Plans are underway for Coastal Carolina University (CCU) to establish a performing arts theatre in Myrtle Beach’s downtown area, a project that took a step forward during Tuesday’s city council meeting.

Lease Agreement Approval

Myrtle Beach City Council approved the first reading of a lease agreement and an operational agreement between CCU and the city for the proposed theatre. The city intends to construct the theatre on Main Street in the Arts and Innovation District, aiming to further revitalize and redevelop the area.

Location and Usage

The theatre will occupy three parcels between Winna’s Kitchen and Sun City Café. Myrtle Beach will lease the facility to CCU for academic purposes, as well as for theatre, dance, music, and special events. According to the agreement, CCU will be responsible for operating and programming the facility.

Lease Terms

The initial lease will span five years, with an option for CCU to extend for an additional five years. The city retains the right to terminate the lease if it deems it economically unfeasible to construct the theatre or if the funds are unavailable.

Next Steps

A Myrtle Beach spokesperson mentioned that it may take around two to three months before the lease agreements return for the second and final readings on the agenda.

Overall, the move to bring CCU theatre to the downtown area signifies a significant development in the city’s cultural landscape and highlights the ongoing efforts to enhance artistic opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
