Fripp Island: A Hidden Gem for Golf Lovers

Welcome to Fripp Island, South Carolina! This captivating coastal getaway is nestled just off the beaten path, making it a unique playground for golf enthusiasts and families alike. You won’t stumble upon this amazing destination by accident, and that’s part of its charm. As I drove through the dark, winding roads, with my wife and daughter snoozing in the backseat, I could feel the anticipation building as the lights of Beaufort faded into the distance.

The Journey to Fripp Island

As we took in the picturesque marsh-bordered creeks and ghostly live oaks, I had to reflect on this rare feeling of getting lost yet knowing exactly where I was headed. After a serene drive, we finally reached the Fripp Island Resort, greeted by the friendly gatehouse. This quaint entrance led us through a fascinating three-mile stretch, where we spotted more deer than other cars. Once we settled in, it was clear that our pre-Thanksgiving vacation was going to be one for the books.

Golf Courses That Wow

Fripp Island boasts two spectacular golf courses: Ocean Point Golf Links and Ocean Creek Golf Club. Ocean Point, designed by George Cobb in 1964, underwent an impressive renovation in celebration of its 60th birthday. The resort hired the highly-regarded Dye Designs Group to give this course a fresh, beachy vibe. Now, instead of blunt bunkers and small greens, golfers can enjoy a natural layout featuring gorgeous, sandy waste areas and new coastal grasses. This $2 million renovation has brought Ocean Point back to life, making it more enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels.

Courses for Everyone

While Ocean Point is an absolute blast, let’s not overlook its younger sibling, Ocean Creek, which came into play in 1994. Designed by the talented Davis Love III, this course offers a different experience but is no less exciting. Ocean Creek lacks ocean views, but its front nine takes you through stunning marshlands, adding to the beauty of the game. The star of the show is the 275-yard 4th hole, a sneaky little par 4 that challenges golfers with its unique green setup, proving that sometimes shorter is better!

A Blend of Fun and Relaxation

Fripp Island strikes the perfect balance between being a summer vacation spot and a golf trip haven in the spring and fall. Families can indulge in broad, clean beaches, while golf groups can enjoy their time on two fantastic courses. If you’re planning a visit, don’t miss the incredible sunrises and sunsets that Fripp Island offers. Head over to Skull Point for a breathtaking sunset—it’s one of the best spots on the east coast!

Accommodations and Amenities

Whether you’re searching for a cozy cottage or a luxurious house with ocean views, Fripp Island has a wide range of rental options. Just a heads up, some rentals are owned by non-members, which limits access to the golf courses and other resort activities. So, be sure to check that fine print before booking your stay! The resort houses provide functionality with plenty of room for families, allowing you to cook meals and maybe even enjoy a game night.

More Than Just Golf

Besides the fairways, visitors can enjoy fishing, tennis, biking, and boating—all just a short ride away. Our evenings at the Beach Club were filled with fun lawn games, and we couldn’t resist checking out the charming Nature Center, which showcases local wildlife, including alligators and dear marsh friends.

What’s Next for Fripp Island?

The recent change in ownership of Fripp Island Resort hints at even more improvements in the future. The new management is set to update restaurants and amenities with exciting plans for a new putting course designed by Agustin Piza. So, when you visit, you’ll find that Fripp Island is constantly evolving while still retaining that lovely, off-the-beaten-path feel.

Final Thoughts

Fripp Island may not be as flashy as places like Hilton Head or Myrtle Beach, but that’s what makes it so appealing. Families searching for a mid-range destination with plenty of charm and value will find their paradise here. As long as it holds onto its uniquely tranquil vibe, this hidden gem will continue to thrive for visitors looking for a relaxing golf getaway.
