Excitement Builds as Horry County Schools Edge Closer to New Superintendent Selection

Horry County, SC – The search for a new leader at the helm of Horry County Schools (HCS) is nearly at its end, and the anticipation is palpable! As the board prepares to announce its top three finalists for the coveted position of superintendent, parents, students, and educators are eagerly waiting to learn who might soon guide their school district.

Mark Your Calendars: Finalists to be Revealed!

The Horry County Board of Education is all set to unveil the names of the top three candidates during a meeting on Monday, December 9. This is a big moment, and everyone is buzzing with excitement! It’s the culmination of a thorough search process that began several months ago. The new superintendent will be stepping into some big shoes left by the retiring Dr. Rick Maxey, who served as HCS’s superintendent since 2015.

Get Ready to Meet the Candidates!

The very next day, December 10, there will be a unique opportunity for the community to get to know these finalists firsthand. Dubbed “A Day in the District,” this event will have each of the three candidates visiting various schools and attending areas around Horry County. They’ll get a feel for the schools, meet with teachers and staff, and really immerse themselves in the community that they could soon be serving.

But wait, there’s more! Later that evening, Horry County residents are invited to an open meet-and-greet event at Ocean Bay Middle School, where folks can chat with the candidates, ask questions, and share their thoughts. This is a perfect opportunity to hear directly from potential future leaders and engage in a dialogue about the direction of the school district.

What Happens Next?

Following the meet-and-greet, the board will conduct second-round interviews with the finalists behind closed doors during a special-called meeting on December 11 at 2 p.m. It seems like the board wants to make sure they get a thorough understanding of each finalist’s vision before making the final decision – and we couldn’t agree more that this is a critical choice for the community!

Community Voices Matter!

Back in September, HCS solicited input from the community through public forums to gather ideas about what qualities residents wanted to see in their next superintendent. This feedback was super important for the board, as it helped shape the search process. In October, the consulting firm BWP & Associates shared the findings from those forums and an online survey, highlighting what the public envisions for the new head of HCS.

The Interim Period

Currently, Dr. Eddie Ingram is stepping in as interim superintendent, leading with experience from his time in similar roles across various school districts in South Carolina and beyond. Earning $19,000 a month along with a $1,000 monthly car allowance, he’s certainly been busy keeping things running smoothly as the board prepares for their pivotal decision.

The importance of having an exceptional superintendent can’t be understated. This role is not just another job; it’s about shaping the educational landscape for students and influencing countless lives in the community. So, as we look forward to the announcement of the top three candidates, let’s hope the right person emerges to lead Horry County Schools into a thriving future!

Stay Tuned!

For updates and to participate in the process, be sure to stay engaged with the upcoming events and join in on the conversations! The future of Horry County Schools is bright, and we are excited to see who will be the next leader!
