Two-Year Wait for Mental Evaluations in Family Homicide Case

Report: Over Two Years and Man Accused of Family Homicide Awaits Mental Evaluations

June 3, 2024 – Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The legal proceedings continue for the man accused of murdering his parents and another related family member nearly two years ago in S.C. Matthew Dewitt, 27, still awaits completion of his mental evaluations, postponing his trial’s start.

The Alleged Crime

Matthew Dewitt is currently implicated in the 2022 murders of his parents, James and Gloria Dewitt. It has been alleged that he shot them to death in their Columbia-area residence. James Dewitt was serving as a member of the Atlantic Beach Town Council when he was tragically killed.

Locals residing near the Dewitt’s home have expressed lingering shock and grief about the incident. Sylvia Roseborough, a neighbor, shared, “Every time you ride by that house, you feel something. You can’t forget it because they were well-loved by our neighbors.” Another neighbor, preferring anonymity relayed, “I was just really sad when it first happened, and every time I pass by that house I just remember. You’ll always remember.”

Additional Accusations

On top of the murder charges over his parents, Matthew Dewitt is also accused of his cousin’s death, 52-year-old Natasha Stevens, within Horry County. Last noted activity linked to this case was observed in records from early February of this year. It is unclear when Dewitt’s trial might proceed, being dependent on pending mental evaluations.

Indictments and Future Proceedings

Evidence available in public court records indicate that Matthew Dewitt was officially indicted on murder charges in Richland County on April 17. The state is keeping information on Dewitt’s state of mental health confidential, as per regulations. However, the implication of ongoing mental evaluations suggests concerns about his competency to stand trial for his actions.

The future remains uncertain for Matthew Dewitt. The progression of his case, to trial or otherwise, hangs in the balance of his mental evaluation results. Hence, as of now, it remains unclear when or if Dewitt will ever stand trial.

This article will be updated with new developments as they occur. Stay tuned for further details on this ongoing investigation.
